Thrilled to be working with these top researchers. We’re exploring how plant hormones regulate crop height to help with lodging resistance. Our recent ARC Linkage project funding connects La Trobe University, The University of Queensland (and our two ARC Centres of Excellence - Plants4Space and Plant Success) with Bayer Crop Science USA.

We are pleased to share that our project, supported under the TÜBİTAK 1001 – Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program, entitled “Determination of the Tolerance of Ficus carica var. rupestris (Hausskn.) Browicz Genetic Resources, as Candidate Rootstocks for Fig, to Drought, Salinity, and Combined Stress Conditions”, has been accepted for funding. The project team includes Dr. Oğuzhan Çalışkan as the principal investigator, Dr. Ömer Faruk COŞKUN as the advisor, and Dr. Erdal Ağlar, Dr. Ahmet Sümbül, Dr. Ercan Yıldız, Dr. Safder Bayazıt, and Seher Toprak as researchers. This project aims to identify fig candidate rootstocks with high tolerance to drought, salinity, and combined stress conditions. We hope the outcomes will contribute to science, agriculture, and sustainable production. For Haydee Laza, associate professor of plant physiology, understanding how plants respond to stress has never been confined to the laboratory. Throughout a career devoted to plant physiology, she has explored how crops communicate, adapt and survive in changing environments. This work has earned her a spot as a 2026 E. Kika De La Garza Science Fellow, a prestigious U.S. Department of Agriculture program that connects faculty from Hispanic-Serving Institutions with the federal scientists and policymakers shaping the future of American agriculture. I’m thrilled to announce that our latest paper has been published in Industrial Crops and Products: “Comparison of the phytochemical profile and antibacterial potential of Cistus creticus leaves and in vitro cell cultures.” 📄 In this study, we addressed the challenge of climate-driven fluctuations in the phytochemical profile of Cistus creticus, demonstrating that in vitro plant cell cultures offer a resilient, highly standardized source of bioactive metabolites with potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against foodborne pathogens. There are some subjects that become more than an area of professional expertise—they become a personal conviction. For me, plant health is one of them. I am very pleased to share my article, “Healthy Seed, Resilient Agriculture: Why Plant Health Systems Are Central to Sustainability,” published in the July 2026 Sustainability Special of FSII’s Seed | Science | Society. Throughout my work with national plant protection organizations, seed companies, laboratories and researchers, I have repeatedly seen that the strongest phytosanitary systems are not necessarily those with the greatest number of requirements. They are those that prevent risk at its source, use sound scientific evidence to identify what genuinely matters and build trust among regulators, science and the seed sector. Plant health work is often invisible when it succeeds. Yet behind every healthy crop is a chain of expertise, vigilance and shared responsibility. When these foundations are strong, healthy seed can move safely and predictably, innovation can reach farmers, and limited resources can be directed towards the risks that truly matter. This is the central reflection behind my article: plant health is not simply a regulatory obligation—it is essential sustainability infrastructure. Honeybees know what time it is. We've known for over a century that bees can remember the time of day a food source pays off. We also know how they communicate this information to others in the colony. But how that time memory is stored and shared inside the brain has largely stayed a mystery. That's the gap my lab is going after. With a new award from USDA NIFA, our lab at Middle Tennessee State University develops tools to determine how circadian neurons encode this information. Once that map exists, we can start testing how stressors like pesticides and climate instability reshape rhythms at the molecular level. Foraging decline and loss of navigation are both clock-linked, and both show up long before a colony actually collapses. If we can detect clock disruption five or six steps upstream, that's an early warning system for beekeepers and growers, not a postmortem.
