We’re introducing a new beta experience for our site redesign. This isn’t just a visual refresh. This is a foundational step toward a faster, more accessible, and more intuitive platform that better supports the future of developer needs. I’m incredibly proud of the thoughtful approach the team took and the speed in which we moved. We made some difficult choices in order to modernize visuals, reduce community friction, and speed future development on the platform. This beta is an invitation. We’re rolling it out to learn, iterate, and build with our users. Your feedback will directly shape where we go next. Day 12 — Making My Go Search Engine Feel Like a Real Search Engine 🔎 Today was about moving beyond ranking… and into search experience. A search engine isn’t just TF-IDF and inverted indexes — it’s how users interact with information. So I implemented two core UX features: ✅ Autocomplete suggestions from index vocabulary ✅ Highlighted snippets showing matched query terms ✅ Integrated both into an interactive terminal UI (TUI) ✅ ANSI-styled colored matches for clear relevance ✅ Live suggestions while typing queries Now when I type: go The engine suggests: • go • goroutines • golang And results show highlighted matches inside documents. This was a big shift from: “engine works internally” → to “engine feels usable externally” Tech stack behind the scenes: • Golang • Inverted Index + TF-IDF ranking • Custom autocomplete engine • BubbleTea TUI framework • ANSI terminal styling Each day this project feels less like a demo and more like a real search system. 🎭 Airtable Omni or Claude? *When* is the question. Yesterday, I wrote about when to use Omni in your Airtable build. What I didn't include was how I also used Claude to optimize my Omni experience. Could I have just used Omni to build out my game? Possibly. But I think it would have been less efficient and would have taken me more than a day to build the entire game. So, when did I use Claude? 🤖 Claude helped me write some of my prompts to Omni, but especially my *very first* prompt (after I had already built out the data in the base). This ensured my initial prompt was thorough and clear so that there was less cleaning up to do once Omni began building. 🤖 I used Claude when I needed to brainstorm ideas, like copy language and visual design. Everything I put in Omni was always my "final draft." 🤖 If I felt that it was easier to fix the code rather than asking Omni to fix the design, I copy and pasted the code from Airtable into Claude and asked it to clearly show me what I'd need to update and then I'd make the edits myself directly in the code. (See attached video on how to find the source code for your Custom Interface!) I view Claude as my design partner and Omni as my engineer. There's a pattern I keep seeing with the web devs who are doing well right now. They're not the ones fighting AI or pretending it doesn't exist. They're also not the ones blindly shipping whatever Copilot spits out. They're the ones who actually know what good software feels like. AI can scaffold an entire app in seconds. That part is real. But it still can't tell you whether the thing you just built is confusing, whether your data model will fall apart at scale, or whether the user flow actually makes sense. That part is still on you. The gap isn't technical skill anymore. It's judgment. Taste. Knowing when something is off before your users tell you. Understanding why an architecture decision matters three months from now, not just today. That's the moat. And it's not going away anytime soon.

Heard great advice to improve vibe coded UIs: take 10 minutes to learn web component vocabulary. Combobox, Drawer, Modal, Accordion, Carousel, Rich text editor, Skeleton, Tooltip, etc. Using specific terms makes UI look more professional and less vibe coded... because it will be. More specific words = more opinionated directions = more deviation from the average generated UI. Does not take much to not smell like slop. If you don't know the vocab it's worth learning. You should be able to name every component on Shadcn and components.gallary as a start! I’m still trying to crack why Claude Code in the CLI has resonated so much with the design community. Is it just hype amplified by a handful of people who figured it out and feeling badass about it? Even for me, and I’m pretty technical, it feels unnecessarily minimal. Why would you do it to yourself when there are easier ways to build with AI? Starting from simple all-in-one environments (Figma Make, v0, Lovable, or Replit) to more flexible AI-powered IDEs (Cursor, Antigravity, or Codex potentially with Claude Code used inside the IDE) feels like a more natural flow to me. IDEs tools tend to need extra wiring for deployment, collaboration, backend setup, and AI integrations, and even getting an app running can be non-trivial if you never done it before. You have termianl in those too, with Claude Code in it if you prefer that. Still, you get an interface for everything else, file tree, code editor if you feel like looking at it. Does not it make the whole experience more pleasant? Or am I just stuck in my old habits, and nobody needs the file tree and code editor anymore...? So I’m stuck on the same question: what’s the real benefit of doing everything straight from the terminal? Any hints? What is in your toolbox?

I’ve tested three platforms seriously. Lovable — where I started. The front end design quality is genuinely impressive out of the box. Beautiful interfaces with minimal direction. Weaker when it comes to complex back end logic and debugging. Best for: getting something that looks great, fast. Replit — where I’ve been building. Stronger on the back end, more robust for complex applications. The front end requires more direction. Uses Claude Code under the hood which in my experience is the strongest AI for actual building right now. Best for: serious projects you plan to scale. Cursor — the most technical of the three. Also uses Claude Code. No built-in front end preview — it’s an IDE, meaning it sits alongside your code rather than replacing it. Requires more comfort with a development environment. Best for: people with some technical background who want AI assistance without giving up control. All three are remarkable. A year ago none of this existed at this level. The question isn’t which tool is best. It’s which tool matches where you are right now

I recently put together a reference guide for designers who are trying to build things with code and AI tools. This started as some rough notes for a few friends. I noticed a common pattern where most of us are perfectly comfortable spinning up UIs in tools like Lovable or v0. But the moment we try to use something like Claude Code, things like the command line, local environments, and GitHub become a massive mental block. I wrote down some basics to help them out, asked AI to clean up the text, and it eventually grew into this site. There are plenty of great beginner videos out there, but I wanted to make something structured you could keep open while working instead of having to scrub through timelines. Just to be completely clear, I am not a developer or an expert. I am a designer who is just figuring this out and creating a knowledge base as I go. A few quick things about it: - It is written specifically for people who are not familiar with code or coding terminology. - I used AI heavily to expand and format my initial notes. I did a few passes to check everything, but there could still be a few minor inaccuracies. - The later tracks cover things I am personally exploring right now, so do not feel like you need to read everything.
