If you bring French wine into the U.S. market, consider prechecking the label for COLA compliance with COLAClear dot com. The platform now pre-screens the label for U.S. distribution. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pouilly-Fuissé, Sancerre, Margaux, Chablis, Côtes du Rhône — about 190 AOCs across Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Rhône, Alsace, and Loire, validated under TTB's imported-wine appellation rules. Federal mandatory checks run alongside: government health warning, sulfite declaration, importer name and address, ABV, country of origin, varietal validity, net contents. The appellation list is sourced from France's official appellation authority and cross-checked against TTB's 2025 dataset of approved labels — 198 French AOCs appear on at least one approved label this year. Grounded in actual practice, not assumption. Free during beta at colaclear dot com. Full link listed in the comments. #CertificateOfLabelApproval #WineLabels #TTBCompliance #COLAClear #LabelDesign

May 14: Perhaps the most significant administrative event in the history of fine wine occurred on today in 1935, with the creation of the Comité National des Appellations d’Origine (now known as the INAO). Following years of riots in Champagne and fraud in Bordeaux, the French government passed a law on this date that established the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system. This was the first time a nation created a comprehensive legal framework to link a wine's name to its specific geography, grape varieties, and production methods. This system became the gold standard for the world, later inspiring Italy’s DOC, Spain’s DO, and the American Viticultural Area (AVA) systems. It effectively ended the era of "fake" wine labeling in Europe. #WineHistory #WineEducation

May 19: Today in 1919, Rep Andrew Volstead introduced an early draft of the National Prohibition Act (famously known as the Volstead Act) to the 66th US Congress. While the 18th Amendment banning alcohol had already been ratified, it lacked a mechanism for enforcement or a legal definition of what exactly constituted an "intoxicating liquor". Volstead's introduction of the bill on this day began a fierce legislative battle. Winemakers originally hoped the law would focus strictly on saloons and hard liquor, leaving low-alcohol table wine consumed at dinner untouched. Instead, the text introduced eventually defined "intoxicating" as anything over a mere 0.5% ABV, effectively signing the death warrant for thousands of commercial vineyards. This single administrative act caused the destruction of thousands of acres of fine Vitis vinifera wine grapes. To survive, growers ripped out delicate grapes and replaced them with thick-skinned, low-quality varieties (like Alicante Bouschet) that could survive cross-country train shipping for legal "home winemaking" loopholes. It took the American wine industry nearly half a century to fully recover its international reputation. #WineHistory #WineEducation

According to the OIV, Georgia consumed approximately 120 million litres of wine in 2024 According to TBC Capital's market research, Georgia's registered commercial producers sold approximately 31 million litres through formal domestic channels in 2024. That leaves an 89 million litre gap. Where does it go? The partial explanations : 1. Aged wine stocks — some wine produced in prior years enters consumption with a lag. 2. Commercially visible bulk & unregistered formal sales — loose wine sold in PET containers, direct farm-gate sales, market stalls with receipts- Real, but TBC Capital's survey of 16 companies already captures the formal segment. TBC Capital independently estimates informal wine at approximately 75% of total domestic consumption, which maps precisely onto the 89 million litre gap. The conclusion is uncomfortable but hard to refute. #GeorgianWine #WineEconomics #WineFinance Sources ¹ OIV — State of the World Vine and Wine Sector in 2024, Table 3, April 2025 https://lnkd.in/dnv3wKyz ² TBC Capital — Georgian Wine Industry Overview 2025 https://lnkd.in/dEWgqAhD ³ National Wine Agency of Georgia — Annual Report 2024 https://lnkd.in/dQQke4GA
