General Note About Heat & Humidity

On hot days, a warm air layer can sit on top of cooler air. FM signals get trapped in this warm layer and travel hundreds of miles before bending back to Earth. What you hear: A distant station bleeds onto a local frequency— two stations at once, or your local station disappears. Common in the upper Midwest in July & August.

High humidity causes uneven moisture in the air and bents and scatters FM signals. Your radio picks up the same signal arriving from multiple directions at slightly different times, and then copies interfere with each other. What you hear: Rapid flutter or warbling on music, a hollow sound on voices, and intermittent static bursts. Stereo quality suffers the most.
