We cannot get through life without difficult times. None of us can. Whether it's a family conflict, career predicament, or personal trauma we are going to experience them. And, yet, how we handle them can make all the difference in our future and the future of those we love. I have been doing psychotherapy for a long time, both with individuals and with couples, and hope I have developed an ability to help manage these life situations. I work with people in both short-term crisis situations and longer-term therapy contexts, from their teens to their nineties.

It is essentially human to crave emotional connection. Neurobiology informs us that deep emotional connections excite complex neural networks, flooding us with ecstasy-inducing dopamine and so it makes sense that we chase more. But negative emotional experiences invariably interrupt our constant searches for positive ones. And when left unattended, piles of negative emotions can lead to feelings of disconnection. What if each negative confrontation is actually a gift, merely disguised as a negative experience, that can be used to help us experience the world differently? I look forward to helping you discover the possibility.

Whether you’re moving through anxiety, trauma, postpartum challenges, or the tender process of self-discovery, I hold space for all parts of you to show up.

I work with people who want support with anxiety, life transitions, past trauma, or dream work. I work well with folks who have a desire to know themselves in a deeper way. In therapy we create a space to pay attention to changes that may be trying to occur in your life, both internally and externally. We will look to the past to attend to any neglected pain, and nurture new growth, vitality, and possibilities for the future. Much of our pain is not just individual, but is connected to our collective and ancestral histories. Acknowledging this larger context can help bring insight, compassion, and belonging.

So many of us move through life carrying quiet burdens. We try to stay strong while something inside feels unsettled or unseen. Therapy isn’t about fixing what’s wrong. It’s about reconnecting with what’s real. For when we find ways to be present with reality, amazing shifts can transpire.

I am fascinated by the resilience of the human body/mind to withstand stress and continue to grow. How we evolve in reaction to adversity can be automatic or we can learn to have more choice in our responsiveness. Therapy is the process of learning to slow down, reflect, and move forward with greater influence over our actions. Connecting teens with the ability to be self-reflective early in their lives will be a resource as they mature. Adolescence is a potent time to intervene with destructive behaviors and redirect for success.

You can be self-aware and still feel stuck. You can understand where a pattern comes from and still find yourself repeating it. You can also be capable, resilient, and deeply accustomed to handling things on your own, and still need somewhere to put down what you’ve been carrying. Sometimes we seek therapy because something hurts, other times, we recognize that the way we’ve learned to move through the world no longer fits who we are becoming. Therapy with me can offer a place to understand not only what you want to change, but what shaped you in the first place, and from that understanding, decide what you want to carry forward.

I would like to tell potential clients that my style is interactive, that I am a good listener, and that most people improve if they are committed to changing. I am particularly good at treating grief and trauma. Patients have come in with multiple losses, have seen their loved ones hurt, injured or murdered, or have themselves been raped, or assaulted and have turned their lives around. Many clients cannot get over a loss of a husband, wife, or lover and have been able to move forward. I value a partnership. I value an open heart and emotional expression.

Welcome to my practice. I believe that at our core, each of us is healthy, whole, and deeply worthy of love and fulfillment. However, life's challenges and our natural coping mechanisms can sometimes create barriers that keep us from fully accessing and living from this best version of ourselves.

For women, men, and couples midlife and long term infertility are life stages that can be filled with grief, confusion, transition and lack of control. My clients come to me saying, “I’m not who I used to be, and I’m not sure who I am now. Don't know how we can move forward.” I am passionate about people in their 40’s and 50’s because I believe that a “third act” is lying just ahead. It’s a stage in life that can be fulfilling, exciting and meaningful. It just doesn't always feel that way.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
