Since 2020, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has been working in partnership with the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) at American University and others to equip trusted adults with the information and skills needed to prevent radicalization to hate and extremism and respond to harm.
Our work to prevent youth radicalization uses a public health approach. This approach is directly informed by listening to communities’ stated needs, centers support for those who have been targeted and/or harmed, and offers non-carceral approaches. Our work aims to strengthen resilient communities, not just resilient individuals.
The resources offered here include prevention guides, rapid response resources, and training and support for communities through the Community Advisory, Resource & Education (CARE) Program. Going forward, SPLC will take the lead in the South and PERIL will lead on CARE expansion to other regions.
CARE Program
The SPLC and PERIL jointly developed the Community Advisory, Resource & Education (CARE) Program. CARE combines prevention expertise with local experience to help communities stay safe from hate and extremism. For support in the South, contact [email protected]. For support in locations outside of the South, contact [email protected].
