Extinct

[edit]

I propose to move from Extinction (which is general article) to Extinct (which is exactly IUCN conservation status). . I also suggest that it will require some changes in User:Ricordisamoa/Wikispecies.js and Special:AbuseFilter/15. Infovarius (talk) 09:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

✓ Done the changes. --Ricordisamoa 19:25, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Update: now SamoaBot can handle these situations: it can change the claim value, and also add a reference. Here is the current approval discussion. --Ricordisamoa 22:45, 19 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
A few remaining old ones are listed at Constraint_violations. --  Docu  at 20:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, it occurs to me that Legobot and SamoaBot already changed all values. You can check here. --Ricordisamoa 23:10, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

History of assignments

[edit]

There's a little edit war at Q15083. Can anyone else (except Succu) discuss if we should/can/prohibit to store historical information about conservation status in Wikidata? I suppose that (usually, as for other properties) we can. Infovarius (talk) 12:15, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I support storing the historic values. ChristianKl (talk) 11:29, 27 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
What do you understand by „historic value”? In the case in question the cirumscription of the species radically changed. How would you annotate this? --Succu (talk) 13:11, 27 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Circumscription may be, but for a new species we create a new item. So one item contain information (historical too) for one taxon. --Infovarius (talk) 18:40, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Another random statement, Infovarius? --Succu (talk) 21:50, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Full information

[edit]

For state (Q7275). For example, Germany (Q183): member of (P463) - Economic, Monetary and Social Union (Q2595976) 1.07.1990 - 2.10.1990; European Atomic Energy Community (Q8919) - 1957-2009; Western European Union (Q189946) - 1954-2011; European Coal and Steel Community (Q161549) - 1951-2002. currency (P38) - Deutsche Mark (Q16068) 1948-2001; flag image (P41) - 1919, 1933, 1935; shares border with (P47) Czechoslovakia (Q33946) 1918-1992, German Democratic Republic (Q16957). head of state (P35) - Theodor Heuss (Q2594) - 1949-1959 and so on.

For university (Q3918). For example, Leipzig University (Q154804): official name (P1448) - 1991-1953, rector (P1075) Johannes Otto von Münsterberg (Q1698117) - 1409-1410 and so on

For automobile manufacturer (Q786820). For example, Mercedes-Benz Group (Q27530): follows (P155) Daimler-Benz AG (Q541477), Maybach (Q35989); employees (P1128) 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015; child organization or unit (P355) Stellantis North America (Q181114) 1998-2007 ... and so on.

For species (Q7432). For example, giraffe (Q15083): IUCN conservation status (P141) - 12.2016. And only? Why? Where 09.2016? species (Q7432) has less right to display the full information? --Fractaler (talk) 10:20, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Status: Not evaluated

[edit]

When a species has no record in the IUCN database (e.g. Lirimiris auriflua (Q13480988) and is classed as "Not evaluated" according to GBIF, the statement should not generate a warning that the IUCN is missing. @Daniel_Mietchen: FYI --DarTar (talk) 19:55, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Around two million species are not evaluated by the IUCN. We do not mark them with not evaluated (Q3350324). --Succu (talk) 20:19, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
But how would you present historical values then? I wanted to add that European hamster (Q208077) was not evaluated before July 2020, when it was immediately added to the list as "critically endangered". Now there're two validation errors, which are both wrong in my opinion. --Tkarcher (talk) 09:27, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Query about amendment of the IUCN Red List Categorie status for "Endangered" (Q11394) at property "IUCN conservation status" (P141) ?

[edit]

Hello,

could someone explain why the IUCN Red List Categorie "endangered species" (Q11394) was amended to "Endangered status" (Q96377276) at (P141)?

Maybe there are issues at Q96377276, because the status Endangered (IUCN) was already available at Q11394! Or the different assigned language articels and labels for Q96377276 are mixed up with different meanings, and therefore Q96377276 is not trustworthy until fixed.

If so, the implemted Autofix, as mentioned in above documentation matrix has to fixed.

Currently the Autofix causes the error that the IUCN label/photo for all species, which have been enterred with IUCN Red List Categorie "Endangerd" in wikidata, do not show the IUCN label/photo (just a broken picture simple is visible).

P.S.: Before the start of this discussion, I have fixed the parameters for "IUCN conservation status" (P141) and now the IUCN label/photo appears correctly again for every species assigned to the IUCN Red List Categorie "Endangered" at the wikidata.

It would be great if this error could be corrected. Thanks Lodewicus de Honsvels (talk) 19:12, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Syncing with up-to-date IUCN conservation status

[edit]

The conservation status of many species is old and out of date, and this information is propagated across the web. For example, the Streambank froglet (Crinia riparia) was assessed by IUCN in 2020 as Endangered. On Wikipedia, its conservation status is still listed as "Least Concern" and this is repeated at iNaturalist, Google, and presumably many other sites that rely on Wikipedia.

It seems the solution would be to keep Wikidata's property P141 in sync with the latest IUCN assessments, which are updated periodically.

One solution would be for volunteers to systematically update this property. However, with 48,600 threatened species, this would be an enormous task. An automated method may be possible using the IUCN Red List API.

Are people aware of this issue? Has there been any proposal along these lines?
