Quote graphic featuring HM Inspector of Constabulary Lee Freeman KPM. It says: “This is not the first time the inspectorate and others have raised concerns about firearms licensing, and change is now overdue. A new national firearms licensing authority should be created to better protect public safety. Further tragedies shouldn’t be required before action is taken.”

The firearms licensing system in England and Wales is not fit for purpose. Our latest inspection found inconsistent decision-making, unclear guidance and poor supervision and oversight across the country.

We have published our latest inspection of @Cumbriapolice. The constabulary has maintained a stable level of performance, with strengths in safeguarding vulnerable people. However, improvements are needed in investigations and managing fraud-related demand.
Graphic showing colour-coded inspection judgement table with four areas rated good and four areas rated adequate. Good (green): Leadership and force management; Developing a diverse and inclusive workforce; Responding to the public; Safeguarding children and adults. Adequate (yellow): Police powers and public treatment; Preventing and deterring crime; Investigating crime; Managing fraud.
