What about deprecating case-insensitive identifiers but keeping them
working. Wouldn't something like following work?
lookup case-sensitive identifier
if not found then
lookup case-insensitive identifier
if found then
raise notice/warning and continue as usual
else
fall down and catch fire
That way correct usage should be fast and incorrect usage work. And the
case-insensitive fallback could be removed in PHP7 :)
