I'm unable to change my Terminal app profile (color theme) even when I change it in the preferences. I selected Homebrew as my profile, closed Terminal and reopened it - but it won't actually change to Homebrew. It shows the basic (default) profile.

Is it possible that I have an issue with my .bash_profile, .bashrc, or .profile?

I'm trying to change it to the profile "Homebrew" seen below: screenshot showing "On startup, open: New window with profile: Homebrew"

  • How did you "close" it? You have to use the shortcut ⌘Q. Also, why are you tagging this question with bash? It is unrelated to the bash shell. Commented Jul 9, 2025 at 7:58

Here's the solution I found:

The solution was to change the "Homebrew" profile to default (this can be undone later).

Go to Terminal preferences (Command+,), then select the "Profiles" tab, and then highlight "Homebrew" and select the "Default" button near the bottom left of the window.

Then close all Terminal app windows and quit Terminal.

Upon opening again, it should show the "Homebrew" profile theme in a new window.

You can change the default back to any other profile.

You have to close all windows, quit Terminal, and then relaunch it for that setting to have an effect.

  • Okay....so what worked was changing the "Homebrew" profile to the default profile by going to Preferences -> Profiles and highlighting "Homebrew" on the left and clicking "default" on the bottom left. For some reason, doing this corrected the issue, even when I subsequently reset the "Basic" profile to default. Commented Jul 9, 2025 at 4:21
