Important note: desktop icons are not available in recent GNOME versions, so make sure you have enabled extension for this functionality. E.g. Desktop Icons NG (DING). Which is enabled in Ubuntu GNOME by default, so you are probably set up.

  1. Open file manager Files.
  2. Navigate to /usr/share/applications directory - here you have all desktop entries from globally installed packages.
  3. Drag any launcher file to your desktop.
  4. Right click on the created launcher on desktop and enable it by Allow launching.

If you want to create custom launcher (not already available in /usr/share/applications), just copy any launcher and edit it as a text file (launcher will be located in your $HOME directory). You could rename it and change its command.
