James Orr shared thisThe Essential Eight isn’t disappearing. It’s simply evolving. Essentially. Here’s what I think many people are missing. Every cyber security framework is a point in time abstraction of the operating environment it was designed to protect. Technology changes. Threats change. Business changes. Eventually, the framework has to catch up. That’s exactly what we’re seeing with ASD’s proposed evolution of the Essential Eight. The Information Security Manual (ISM), from which the Essential Eight was distilled as a prioritised baseline, has continued to evolve as technology, infrastructure, cloud, identity, operational technology, data and AI have evolved. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the baseline is evolving to better reflect the operating environments it was designed to protect. Perhaps the biggest misconception is believing the Essential Eight was ever intended to stand alone. It wasn’t. Mature organisations don’t build cyber security programs around frameworks. They build them around risk. Frameworks provide a structured way to reduce, measure, communicate and demonstrate that risk is being managed. That’s why I see ASD’s announcement as less about replacing the Essential Eight and more about ensuring Australia’s cyber security baseline continues to reflect how organisations actually operate today. https://lnkd.in/guDmQJ4i? Great to see the continued representation AIDN brings across the industry, and to hear Graham Priestnall OAM’s remarks, along with the broader AIDN work CEO Mike Johnson is leading. What stood out was the alignment across the room. Different organisations, different pressures, but a shared understanding that expectations and opportunities across the defence supply chain are becoming clearer and more immediate. It was a strong turnout, with consistent themes emerging across the room. The conversation around business resilience now requires action. It is being driven by primes, tenders, and customers asking for clear, defensible evidence of posture. Different organisations are being triggered in different ways, but the underlying pressure is the same. The expectation is to respond with confidence, clarity and evidence. Sessions like this exist to surface that reality. Not to drive a narrative of fear, but to provide an on the ground view of what is happening across the defence supply chain and where businesses currently sit. Thank you to the AIDN team for the coordination and support in delivering the event. A significant amount of effort goes into bringing these sessions together. To be asked to be part of the official photo by the current Commander 3rd Armoured Brigade in Brigadier Ben McLennan , amongst such esteemed prior Brigade Commanders and Brigade RSM’s was very special . Having had a direct and indirect relationship with this Brigade and Lavarack Barracks since I was 11 years old , being part of today brought back so many memories , such as seeing my dads photo on the wall and name on the honour board of past Brigade commanders . We felt incredibly privileged to be part of a celebration that shines a spotlight on the very best of Australia’s independent music industry. It was wonderful to share the night with our incredible Defence Kidz Ambassador Kammy Lee, our Board Member Rebecca Zanol, Henry Davis and Kasis. Great company made an already memorable evening even more special. A huge congratulations to Dylan Lewis and Jessica Braithwaite, who did a brilliant job hosting the evening. Their energy, humour and passion helped make it a truly outstanding event. One of the absolute highlights for us was finally meeting The Teeny Tiny Stevies! Their music has brought so much joy to children and families, so it was a real pleasure to meet the talented duo in person. Despite reiterating I work client side, almost all (let's say 99%....) of these stories do not involve an insurance broker in the equation and are regarding direct to consumer insurance products like health insurance, domestic car insurance or home and contents insurance. The below statistic does not get shared enough in my opinion. Insurance may always be a grudge purchase, but it does not change the fact that it is also a necessary purchase for a mature business operation. For example, contents insurance premiums to cover traditional desks, chairs and office fit outs get paid year on year, yet around 80% continue to trade with $0 of cyber insurance coverage in place, despite these 2 premiums commonly being similar amounts. COVID showed us that businesses can continue operating when staff cannot access a physical office, but what happens when critical online systems are encrypted by ransomware and operations grind to a halt? Physical loss within an office space is often easily replaceable by transitioning staff to work from home arrangements, however your ability to access online systems is not so simple. So why the disconnect? Is it simply a case of paying a bill that is already there versus adding in a new one? See projectWorking with the Australian Defence Force and the University of Queensland during our commercialisation capstone for the Masters of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2020 we were tasked with developing a mechanism that enables the ADF to engage with and acquire emerging Australian technologies.
Working with project leads Cameron Turner (UQ) and Jerome Reid (ADF) our team set upon the task of developing and validating a basis for establishing a Defence capability development and…Working with the Australian Defence Force and the University of Queensland during our commercialisation capstone for the Masters of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2020 we were tasked with developing a mechanism that enables the ADF to engage with and acquire emerging Australian technologies.
Working with project leads Cameron Turner (UQ) and Jerome Reid (ADF) our team set upon the task of developing and validating a basis for establishing a Defence capability development and acquisition program led by UQ in partnership with the Defence AI Centre.
Focused on enhancing the ability of the ADF to identify, engage, develop and acquire Australian sovereign capabilities that align with the requirements of the “One Defence” model, the foundation of the Defence capability strategic roadmap.
Problem definition maintained the foundation of the project, initial activities uncovered the symptoms of larger challenges, challenges that needed identifying and validating to develop the opportunity framework to overcome them.
The Defence Innovation Bridge was the product of hundreds of hours of interviews and data gathering to create insights that enabled the synthesis of a solution that enables external academic and emerging technology developers to interface with Defence using the Defence Innovation Bridge.
Lead by the University of Queensland the Defence Innovation Bridge program will commence in 2020 after receiving funding and endorsement from the ADF to pilot the program, a proud outcome for all involved.
