  • Trade spend shouldn't be a surprise. One of the things we see CPG brands struggle with is understanding just how much they're actually spending to support their retail business. MCBs. EDLPs. Free fills. Distributor charges. OIs. Promotions. It adds up quickly. In some cases, trade spend can represent 20–30% of gross sales. And yet, many brands don't have a clear forecast for it, aren't tracking their commitments closely, and aren't measuring whether the money they're spending is actually generating incremental sales. That's a problem. At a minimum, brands should be: 👉 Forecasting their expected trade spend 👉 Understanding their baseline sales 👉 Measuring incremental lift from promotions 👉 Tracking and reconciling deductions 👉 Keeping a record of commitments made by their sales team/broker You don't need to become an expert in every retailer's promotional program. But you do need to know where your money is going. Because trade spend is part of the CPG game. Flying blind shouldn't be. We went a little deeper into this in the latest edition of Market Basket Musings, including a simple example of how to calculate baseline sales and incremental lift.

  • Over the past several weeks, we've been taking a closer look at the major grocery organizations operating in Canada and the banners that fall under each of them. From national giants to regional banners, we've explored the retail networks that shape where Canadians shop every day. Why? Because understanding retailer ownership and banner structures is valuable knowledge for brands, brokers, distributors, and anyone working in the grocery industry. It helps provide context around market reach, customer demographics, regional strengths, and retail strategy. To make things easier, we've compiled the entire series into a single PDF reference guide. Whether you followed along from the beginning or missed a few posts, you can now find everything in one place. 📖 Included: • Major Canadian grocery organizations • Their operating banners • Regional retail networks • A convenient reference for grocery industry professionals We hope you find it useful. As always, we'd love to hear what grocery industry topics you'd like us to explore next. #CanadianGrocery #CPG #Retail #GroceryIndustry #FoodIndustry #RetailStrategy #ConsumerGoods #CanadianRetail

  • Mitoku – A Story That Begins with Erewhon Sometimes the most interesting brand stories are hidden in the footnotes of history. When researching one of our partners, Mitoku, we discovered a connection to a name many people in the natural food industry know well: Erewhon. The story begins in the late 1960s when Michio Kushi, one of the pioneers of the macrobiotic movement, was working to introduce a more natural approach to food and wellness in North America. In pursuit of that mission, he opened a natural foods store in Boston called Erewhon. Around the same time, Kushi crossed paths with Akiyoshi Kazama, who was already active in Japan's import-export industry. Recognizing a shared vision, the two joined forces to bring authentic Japanese foods to a wider audience. That partnership eventually led Kazama to establish Mitoku Co., Ltd. in 1969. More than 50 years later, Mitoku continues to do exactly what it was founded to do: connect consumers around the world with traditional Japanese foods produced by skilled artisans and family businesses that preserve centuries-old methods. Today, Mitoku exports to more than 40 countries and has become a trusted source for organic and natural Japanese foods, while maintaining the principles of quality, authenticity, and integrity that inspired its founding. It's remarkable to think that a company helping shape the global natural foods movement in 1969 is still thriving today—and that its story intersects with a retailer that has since become one of the most influential names in premium natural foods. The food industry is full of stories like this. Sometimes a brand isn't just selling products; it's carrying forward a piece of history. #BrandSpotlight #Mitoku #NaturalFoods #OrganicFoods #JapaneseFood #CPG #FoodIndustry #Erewhon #HealthFood #SaludBrandManagement

  • 🫚 Brand Spotlight: goodvibes juice co. 🍋 In 2016, childhood best friends Lloyd Arbour and Drew Edward Butterworth decided to combine business with their shared passion and start a juice company together. They launched Goodvibes Juice Co. in Kitchener-Waterloo and quickly developed a loyal following. However, they began noticing a trend: their top-selling wellness shot was a shield against cold and flu season called SICKDAY. This powerhouse wellness shot, featuring ingredients such as ginger and echinacea, quickly rose to become their star product. Customers kept coming back, and it became clear that the opportunity extended far beyond the juice bar. Recognizing the potential, Lloyd and Drew made a bold pivot. Rather than continue managing the operational complexities of a retail juice shop, they focused on scaling what was becoming their hero product. That decision led to the expansion of the Goodvibes wellness shot lineup with products like GET WELL and TURMERIC DAILY, helping make holistic ingredients convenient, accessible, and delicious for consumers. Their mission remains simple: "Let food be thy friend." That commitment to natural ingredients and functional wellness has helped fuel an incredible growth story. 📈 In 2024, Goodvibes appeared on the hit television show Dragon's Den and secured a deal with Manjit Minhas. 📈 They are now preparing for an exciting U.S. expansion with a major retailer. 📈 Since partnering with Salud Brand Management nearly five years ago, they have achieved a remarkable CAGR of approximately 75%. Watching founders stay true to their vision while adapting their business to where consumers are taking them is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. Congratulations to Lloyd, Drew, and the entire team at Goodvibes Juice Co. We are proud to be part of the journey and excited to spotlight your brand this month. #BrandSpotlight #CPG #Entrepreneurship #Wellness #FunctionalBeverages #DragonsDen #CanadianBusiness #Growth #FoodAndBeverage #SaludBrandManagement
