Given there are so many kaggle competitions, how does the winner win technically? Does he/she invent a completely new algorithm to solve the problem? By now there are 8 million sincere students who have completed the famed Andrew Ng course on ML. If everybody has same learning, what differs in the competition? Everybody has been given the same basic technical knowledge right by him, how does the ranking happen during the competition.

Maybe a small example : We have been asked to predict the boston house price. If everybody applies multiple linear regression, everybody will have same points. Do winners discover some new algorithm through sheer talent and broadness of knowledge
