Proud to share our new article in #Journal of Innovation & knowledge from Elsevier “Applying knowledge transfer in data augmentation to improve online advertising performance of entrepreneurs.” Authors: Rubén Huertas García Laura Sáez and Santiago Forgas Coll from Universitat de Barcelona , Facultat d'Economia i Empresa - Universitat de Barcelona Universitat de Barcelona Business School and Javier Sánchez-García Universitat Jaume I We show how combining XGBoost with data augmentation (SMOTE) enhances segmentation and targeting in entrepreneurs’ online campaigns. Using a real case across five categories (hearing aids, NGOs, energy, telecom, finance) and an A/B field test in energy (solar panels), we find: - SMOTE-based augmentation balances scarce data and improves model accuracy when samples are small or imbalanced. - Internal validation improves in 4 of 5 products with synthetic data. - In an email A/B (20,000 users), the DA-selected segment achieved higher conversions: 7.79% vs. 6.80% (+0.99 pp). Takeaways for practitioners: - Use DA when classes are imbalanced or data is limited. - Validate externally (A/B tests) before scaling. - Match the DA method to your data; SMOTE works well with few variables and strong imbalance. Spain has the science, the talent, and now, the momentum to lead on AI-powered sustainability. Yesterday’s IV Foro IndesIA felt like a turning point. 400+ leaders from industry, government, and technology came together to align on one mission: → Scale AI adoption across Spanish industries → Drive competitiveness through innovation → Tackle the climate challenge head-on It was an honor to speak alongside leaders from Repsol, Duke Energy Corporation, Airbus, Telefonica, Microsoft — and to share the stage with Spain’s Secretary of State for Digital Transformation and AI (María González Veracruz) , as well as members of the C-suite from IBEX 35 companies. What stood out most? For the first time, AI and sustainability weren’t treated as separate goals — but as one shared responsibility. There was a common understanding in the room: You can’t scale AI without considering the environmental impact of your decisions. And you can’t build climate resilience without the speed and precision AI enables.
