Moderators can now award custom badges.

Could we have a badge for winning SotW? I’m thinking a Silver badge, maybe called Achiever (or something like that) that can be awarded multiple times (once for each win).

If the mods are willing, might it also be possible to retroactively award these if it’s not too much work?

Also, I’ve created now that this is a thing.

I'd be happy to retroactively award these - it might not happen in a single sitting but I'll make sure everyone gets a badge eventually Commented Jan 26 at 22:36
  • Will they be meta or main site badges? Commented Jan 27 at 12:28

Personally, I would prefer main site badges just because it's a bit more prominent. Also, it might help drive traffic to Meta ("ooh, what’s this sotw thing in the badge?"). Commented Jan 27 at 16:16

@pinckerman - We can specify if we want a custom badge to be main site or meta. (Personally, I'd lean towards main site for SotW though) Commented Jan 28 at 23:11

@Robotnik I agree: the SotW challenge takes place behind the scenes, but the actual purpose is to have the SotW on the main site. Commented 2 days ago

According to the Custom Badge FAQ, proposals need the following to be considered:

  1. Badge Name (25 characters): This should be a descriptive, and maybe even fun, name for the badge.
  2. Badge Class (Bronze, Silver, Gold): Specify the class for the badge. Remember that gold badges should be fairly rare!
  3. Badge Description (200 characters): This should explain how the badge is acquired.
  4. Awardable Multiple Times? (Yes or No): You should indicate whether this badge can be awarded multiple times. Most of the time, you should default to “Yes”.
  5. Criteria to Earn: You should explain how a user would earn this badge. These can be as objective or subjective as you feel is appropriate for your community.

I've put my suggestions below, but please feel free to propose edits (or entirely new answers if you'd prefer):

Name: Screenshotter1
Tier: Bronze2
Description: Awarded for winning a competition on Arqade Meta3
Can be earned multiple times?: Yes
Criteria: Win or tie a Screenshot of the Week competition by earning the most votes before voting is closed.4

Name: Screenshot Enthusiast
Tier: Silver
Description: Awarded for winning a competition on Arqade Meta 5 times
Can be earned multiple times?: Yes
Criteria: Win or tie a Screenshot of the Week competition 5 times by earning the most votes before voting is closed.

Name: Screenshot Addict
Tier: Gold
Description: Awarded for winning a competition on Arqade Meta 10 times
Can be earned multiple times?: Yes
Criteria: Win or tie a Screenshot of the Week competition 10 times by earning the most votes before voting is closed.

1: Thanks to @pinckerman for the rename! I originally suggested "Screenshot Comp Winner", as "Screenshot of the Week Winner" blows past the 25-character limit. Still open to suggestions for other names.
2: Save the Silvers and Golds for win streaks and other "harder" goals
3: I'm assuming both links AND tag links that point to Meta tags are acceptable here. The former is used on multiple badges, and the latter is used for Tag badges, but they point to the main site, not meta. If we can't use tag formatting, a raw link to the meta tag page for screenshot-of-the-week's newest tab would also be acceptable.
4: This covers us for the situation where a submission earns more votes after the winner is announced and the competition is closed. (Note that I thought we could potentially have a separate badge to recognise this special case, as covered by my answer on Meta SE).

What about "Screenshotter", "Screenshot addicted" or "Screenthusiast"? Commented Jan 27 at 12:31
  • Also, something I'm a bit curious with "overlapping" badges like this: say you just won for the 10th time. Would you get the gold, silver, and bronze tiers all at once? Or just the highest tier? Commented Jan 28 at 2:34

@voided I'd say all of them. When you answer a question getting 10+ votes and it's also accepted you earn both "nice answer" and "enlightened". Commented Jan 28 at 8:59
  • @voided - one possible solution to this, is to have Bronze and Silver awarded once, but Gold achievable multiple times. So you can continue to earn extra Golds for every 10 wins, but the Bronze and Silver are just earned once. (We could also do the reverse - Earn Bronze multiple times, but Silver and Gold are awarded once). Personally I think it's just easier to have them all awarded multiple times though. @Robotnik It would take a really long time to win ≥20 SotW contests. Limiting the repeating badges to only gold might be biased toward the few long-time submitters ;) In all seriousness, although I personally would prefer the extra badges, this might be the best way for mods to keep track of which badge a submitter is earning. However, an easier way to keep track might be good to look into, since 'the more badges, the merrier.' Commented Jan 28 at 23:36

'Screenarcher' is a fairly well-known term among takers-of-screenshots. Perhaps a proper fit for the gold tier? Commented 2 days ago
  • @Joachim So I googled it and it seems to be a common enough term, but it might be too niche? At least, I'd never heard of it before. Commented 2 days ago

@voided I actually like it even more because of that, since it shows the exclusivity of the term and the badge, and a real interest in the art of creating screenshots. Commented 2 days ago
  • @Joachim That makes sense, sure. Commented 2 days ago
