The most important priority for policymakers now is to protect their most vulnerable populations. COVID-19 was a demand shock as the global economy shut down. The Strait of Hormuz crisis is a supply shock disrupting energy and fertilizer supplies. Blanket subsidies will not secure supply, or reduce demand. Governments should activate highly targeted programmes for vulnerable households, especially in rural areas, while markets adjust to supply scarcity. FAO is officially opening the call for proposals for joint Fora, side-events, and pre- the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) events to take place during the in-person meeting of the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food and Knowledge Systems, from 12 to 16 October 2026.   Hosted inside the Sámi Indigenous Nomadic tents at FAO Headquarters, this event represents a unique space for intercultural co-creation of knowledge, gathering Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, UN Agencies and policy makers. Agriculture's dependence on diesel leaves farmers vulnerable to oil price shocks. Energy transition needs to happen in agrifood systems, too. Solar-powered irrigation, rural electrification, and cleaner power grids can strengthen productivity and resilience, and cut costs. Concessional financing and soft loans can bring these solutions to scale. Agrifood systems are complex, interconnected and span all sectors, making them pivotal to the achievement of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, said Friday. “With less than five years to 2030, the world is not on track,” Qu said, referring to the SDG target deadline. “Our response is not to despair, but to accelerate.” The Director-General spoke at a launch event for FAO and the SDGs – Accelerating transformation through the four betters, a publication that highlights how agrifood systems are the connective tissue to advance the 2030 Agenda and presents a comprehensive account of how FAO and its Members are working together to speed up progress across all 17 SDGs. The 162-page publication offers a goal-by-goal overview, replete with key challenges, policy recommendations and technical solutions, of how FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-2031 supports countries in transforming agrifood systems to become more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable, leading to better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, leaving no one behind.   https://lnkd.in/emqXJeDE
