If one goes to a forensic psychiatrist they can prove child abuse by relatives years after the event occurred. My understanding is usually the statute of limitations is two years from turning 18. However, usually it takes decades of therapy to realize an event occurred.
Because of this childhood sexual assault basically does not have statute of limitations, or it's extremely long like 20 years. But, physical and psychological abuse have much much shorter time frames.
Let's say in the state of Illinois twenty years after the event one visits a forensic psychiatrist and he proves some childhood abuse (non-sexual) occurred. Can this be used to then sue the person who committed the abuse decades later?
