I am running Wolfram 14.1 on Arch Linux. I'm not sure when this problem first started; I vaguely recall having some marginally slow PDF export times on an older version, but nothing like what's happening now.

Currently, when I try to export to PDF, the program becomes non-responsive. The PDF file gets created on disk immediately, but is zero bytes in size. Eventually, after a period ranging between 2 minutes at best and around 4 minutes at worst, the program comes back to life, and the PDF file gets successfully exported.

Very occasionally, I get normal behaviour, where no unresponsiveness occurs and the PDF export completes successful straightaway. But that's a rarity; I would say at least 90% of the time I try exporting, I frustratingly have to sit there and wait a few minutes to get the PDF output.

Please note also that this happens regardless of which method I use to export the PDF:

  • File --> Save As --> Save as PDF
  • File --> Print --> Print to File (PDF)
  • Running the command Export["notebook.pdf", EvaluationNotebook[]];

I am just about at my wits' end. I have tried playing around with a few different settings, and while at times I've thought I've stumbled upon what was causing the slowdown, I can only presume that it must have been a random occurrence, as on subsequent export attempts it returns to the same old extremely slow behaviour.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    $\begingroup$ Welcome to Mathematica StackExchange! To better understand your problem: Does this happen in every notebook, even very small text-only ones, or only on very large notebooks, containing some complicated graphics? $\endgroup$ Commented Apr 18 at 7:53
  • $\begingroup$ @Domen Thank you very much for the welcome and response. It's happening on very small text-only notebooks too. I just tried some minimal notebooks, all with the following code: f[x_] := x^2 f[6] and exported each using the File --> Save As method. The results were: * Notebook 1: immediate export, no freezing. * Notebook 2: near immediate export, after going unresponsive for a few seconds. * Notebook 3: attempted twice, each time it went unresponsive for a full minute * Notebook 4: Went unresponsive for about 30 seconds. $\endgroup$ Commented Apr 18 at 8:15
  • $\begingroup$ @Domen To clarify, when I mentioned in my original post that sometimes it was taking up to 4 minutes, that also was not a graphic-heavy notebook. In fact, there were no plots or graphics at all. It still was just text-only, albeit with slightly more complicated code than in my examples for testing in the above comment. $\endgroup$ Commented Apr 18 at 8:18
  • $\begingroup$ @fractal_sounds Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same issue. Mathematica 14.2 on Ubuntu becomes unresponsive during print to pdf (eventually recovers and produces correct pdf). $\endgroup$ Commented Jul 2 at 3:27
  • $\begingroup$ @Thomas No I didn't unfortunately. I tried fiddling around with various settings for a while and would very occasionally get it to export normally, but then on other occasions the same settings (that I thought were the "correct" ones) would once again cause unresponsive behaviour. I eventually just gave up on it as I couldn't seem to figure out any repeatable patterns. :( $\endgroup$ Commented Jul 10 at 21:19
