The feature is indeed disabled (by design). It was done while investigating a performance optimisation related to the internal Tag Engine. We're actively looking into this - I'll come back when I know more. Commented Aug 13 at 11:17

@gcasar This data would be so easily cached (it wouldn't matter at all if it was slightly out of date). I hope it can be reinstated very soon! Commented Aug 13 at 11:31

Around caching: it exists both on the questions, tags and multiple-tags. Your suggestion @curiousdannii is definitely a good for the first two but not the multiple-tags one - it adds complexity to the system that I'd rather simplify by optimising the hot path / adapting the underlying index for it. I gauged the usage of the feature and got a broad sense of the work it would take to resolve the performance problem. There is no current plan to bring the feature back.

I am interested in getting more information around how folks used it which could definitely help me make a better case internally to revisit the decision - any comments here are appreciated. Things like:

  • Did you start from the questions page, composing the search into multiple tags?
  • Do you use it deliberately or as a curiosity to discover more content?

From a technical perspective - this feature simply did not get enough love. It was partially migrated sometime in the past 3 years leading to the performance problem with us querying the database in a roundabout way.

I frequently used it for finding duplicate questions. I'd start with one topical tag and then add a type-of-question tag, which would almost always be there in the top 20 or however many it would list. I can still manually type those in, so it doesn't seem like it would need a change to the DB indexes. Commented Aug 22 at 11:30

Honestly, the "related" tags often ended up being, well, not very related. I'd definitely love to have some sort of feature where you could identify/link actually related tags (e.g. linking each D&D edition tag on RPG.SE to the other D&D edition tags), but the "Related Tags" feature we had until recently did not do that very well.
