To get the ball rolling for the new Community Badge feature, I thought I'd suggest a badge that promotes some engagement with the new feature. A badge you get for successfully suggesting a community badge. If this is accepted, as well, this has the added benefit of mods don't need to back date any badges that might have been proposed in the past.

  • Badge Name (25 characters): Badger
  • Badge Class (Bronze, Silver, Gold): Gold
  • Badge Description (200 characters): Submit an idea for a Community Badge, which is then successfully accepted and implemented.
  • Awardable Multiple Times? (Yes or No): Yes
  • Criteria to Earn: Submit an idea on Stack Overflow Meta, that suggests a Community Badge, using the tag. The suggestion then needs to be well received by the community, and also successfully complete the escalation process from the Moderator and Staff teams. If your suggestion is successful, and the community badge is implemented, the Badger badge will be awarded to you after the suggested Community Badge has been added to the site.

I'm aware of the irony that, if this badge is successful, I would therefore be awarded this badge.

  • What about making a list of all things you can do on the site and, next to it, the badges you can win, and see if there is anything you can do without earning a badge? Commented 2 days ago

I'm not in favour.

This is by definition a meta badge. We do not currently have any posts asking for community badges, and I'm not convinced these are a good idea on SO in the first place. Before meta badges like this, I'd first like to see some great suggestions for badges that relate to something more substantial.

If these suggestions materialize and the respective badges are added, we could come back to this suggestion. As community badges are manually awarded anyways, there is no rush to create this badge first as it could just be awarded retroactively.

I will mention that these badges can be created on Meta SO and only awarded on Meta SO, if desired. My only guidance is that I would stray away from meta-only badges as they are by design less visible than main-site ones, but for something like this, I would see it as an appropriate place to house the badge. @Spevacus I used "meta badge" in this answer in the sense that this would be a badge about community badges. But you're entirely correct that it would also seem more fitting if this badge was on meta and not on main and that isn't great as well (although from a technical perspective it could just as well be created and awarded on main as this is all manual work). As l4mpi mentioned, a badge for submitting badge ideas feels a bit too meta. Badges don't directly contribute to improving the site, and I have doubts about how many useful badge ideas would get submitted after the first few months.

Alternate idea: A community badge for submitting a bug report or feature request that is fixed and/or implemented. (IE: Posts tagged with ).

While it's still a bit meta, expanding the scope to bugs and feature requests feels more broadly applicable to the site as a whole. It could be retroactively awarded to users who have already met the criteria and would hopefully encourage people to submit constructive suggestions.

I like that concept as recognition for people who contribute ideas and bug reports seems like a great idea. The practical issues I see are a) multiple users can contribute to an idea or a bug (e.g. duplicate/similar feature request posts, or similar suggestions in answers to SE feature announcements, potentially with large time diffs; award all of them or only based on further criteria?) and b) we have almost 5400 questions with the tag and the documented process for awarding a badge requires mods to do this individually for each user via their profile, so this would be a lot of mod work. • Something in a similar vein to the proposal in this answer, would be to create new badges for certain curation work on the main/meta site. Something along the lines of massive retagging efforts or burninations, lots of accepted flags, AI-nuker etc Commented 2 days ago

I both like this and don't. There are many worthy FRs and bugs that are not implemented/fixed. The person who posted them has done their job, company didn't. While there are simple sometimes not very important bugs which were fixed. This badge would encourage requesting low priority bug-fixes/features :/ Commented 2 days ago
