I might soon start a project I have in mind for a long time - building an external water filter for the aquarium, limited series (one piece, for personal use).

I have a good idea how to deal with the other details, but I have a small problems moving the water between the filter and the aquarium (both ways).

So, is there a standard for the tubes used in conjunction with water filters? If yes, what is the internal diameter of the tube?

The answer to this question has an impact on getting the other needed connectors.

Side question: is there any standardization about the connectors and accessories? Elbows, taps...

There's no single global standard, but hobby gear tends to cluster around a few common tube sizes: 12/16 mm (12 mm ID x 16 mm OD) and 16/22 mm (16 mm ID x 22 mm OD) are very common for canister and external filters.

connectors are likewise informal: hose-barb fittings, compression (push-fit) fittings, bulkheads, quick-disconnects and standard worm-clip or spring clamps are used. Match fittings to the tube ID for a tight barb fit or to OD compression fittings, use clamps and silicone or PTFE tape for seals where needed. if in doubt, measure tubing with calipers and buy fittings rated for that dimension

  • Just for my knowledge, why are the in and out diameters different? Commented Nov 24 at 5:26
  • @virolino it is the inside diameter of the hoses you use when buying, the difference in inside vs outside diameter of the hose say how thick the walls of the hose are.input and output sizes are mostly the same on filters and pumps of the same brand. Commented Nov 24 at 5:45
  • oh!. The other in/out :) Thank you for the quick answer. I ask about diameters, also because I do not find fittings made of plastic only. Made of aluminum or stainless steel, even less :( Commented Nov 24 at 5:49
