Why does Turkey need AMRAAM missiles to be imported from the USA given that it has already developed GÖKTUĞ missiles?

Are these AMRAAM missiles destined for Pakistan?

None of the Göktuğ missiles are deployed yet: they are still in development and Turkiye is stil testing prototypes. Is there any particular reason to think Turkiye isn't just buying more modern AMRAAM versions for its own use until their domestic program can provide that capability? Commented May 20, 2025 at 11:23
  • The AIM-120C-8 isn’t a game changer over what Turkey or India or Pakistan has now. It’s a middling medium range missile with a range of 50 miles (90 km). The D variant has twice the range and the long range series go quiet a bit further. The AIM-120C-8 is primarily built for the export market the U.S. is moving to the AIM-260 JATM which has the same demensions with improve speed and range as a medium range AIM-120 replacement. • The AIM-120C-8 has the same range and role as the Turkish home grown Göktuğ missile 90 km. Both are medium range beyond visual range homing missiles. Commented May 20, 2025 at 16:30

The first Gökdoğan missiles were delivered in July 2024, but it's not clear how many have been delivered, or how ready for deployment they actually are. The initial contract was for only 25 missiles, so Turkey is still some way away from phasing out the AMRAAM. There doesn't seem to be any reason to doubt that this purchase (which was initally agreed in January 2024) is obtaining upgraded missiles for its own use.

What Turkey might choose to do with its older AMRAAMs is another question, but they are almost certainly not permitted to sell or give them to Pakistan without US approval. If they chose to do it clandestinely, then none of us would know unless and until the missiles turn up there.
