Respected for his intellect, trusted for his judgement and admired for his generosity, Westpac's former chief economist leaves behind an enduring legacy that reaches far beyond economics. I was given room to work out where I could contribute. Be A Fish Bait became the clearest answer from my first year. The game has reached 60k+ peak concurrent players, crossed 35M+ visits, regularly sits around 15k to 25k CCU, and is profitable. A community has grown around it too: 1.2M members in our Roblox group, 35.5k members on Discord, and organic coverage from creators with multi-million subscriber audiences, including videos crossing 100k views. The results mean a lot, but so does how we got there. Early on, talent was one of the main constraints. Rather than wait for a ready-made pipeline, I worked with colleagues and university partners to organise Garena’s first game-development hackathon with an institute of higher learning. It was not something I had done before. It simply seemed like the most practical way to find promising builders and give them a real opportunity to build. Two interns were eventually identified through the hackathon. Together with returning interns, they formed the five-person team behind Be A Fish Bait. Although I was no longer a formal team lead, I chose to stay close to the work. My role was not to be the main technical builder. It was to bring together what I had learnt from publishing, product, design thinking, community, and coaching, then help the team navigate decisions around players, development, live operations, and the business. This experience made Garena’s values feel especially real to me. We Serve meant allowing player behaviour to challenge our assumptions. We Adapt meant learning a new platform and changing our approach as our understanding improved. We Run meant acting when the need became clear, instead of waiting for a perfect setup. We Commit meant following the work through from talent discovery to development, launch, growth, and live operations. We Stay Humble means recognising that success does not prove every decision was right. It gives us a better foundation to improve from. The game belongs first and foremost to the team that designed, programmed, modelled, tested, fixed, and updated it. I am grateful to them, and to the colleagues, leaders, university partners, moderators, creators, and players who supported the journey. For me, being a Garenian means being trusted with an open field, understanding what is needed, and working with others to turn that into something useful. The next step is to make this less dependent on one game or one team, through stronger live operations, better update design, deeper talent pathways, and sharper product judgment. I hope this becomes one step towards a stronger ability to build and grow games from Singapore. #Garena #Roblox #GameDevelopment #Strategy #TalentDevelopment

Revenue was close to zero, and we were fully focused on building an automated gifting-sending solution based on how the US players were doing it. What saved us was partly the experience we had from building traditional businesses before, but more importantly, the realisation that our market behaves differently. So we changed direction. Instead of trying to automate the sending process first, we focused on making corporate merchandise and gifting seamless for our clients. We were also the only company in the space with an in-house product and dev team, and we continued putting almost every dollar of profit back into product development. Today is one of those days where we can finally pause and smile a little. We have crossed seven figures in annual sales, while maintaining a gross margin of around 50%. The funny thing is, although this is the fourth business I have built that has crossed this milestone, this has easily been the hardest. Building in a downturn is difficult. Convincing customers to buy based on value, rather than simply choosing the lowest price, is even harder. There is still a long way to go, but today feels like a milestone worth appreciating. To our clients and partners, thankyou for supporting us and being on this journey with us. And yes, US here we come ;).

I’ve been fortunate to work closely with colleagues from URA and SLA on efforts to improve the planning and coordination of underground utilities and infrastructure. It is complex work that requires agencies to come together, share data, align plans and think long term. Encouraging to see the value of these efforts becoming increasingly evident. As discussions continue at the World Cities Summit this week, it is a timely reminder that building better cities depends not only on what we build above ground, but also on how well we plan below it.S’pore saved $300m in construction costs by avoiding clashes in underground utility projectsS’pore saved $300m in construction costs by avoiding clashes in underground utility projects

The youngest of eight, she entered the workforce as soon as she could, right after completing her secondary education. When I was two, she took custody of my older sister and I, then proceeded to singlehandedly raise two daughters, working three jobs every day of the week. It was not easy but she made sure we always had everything we needed, and then some. This week, we did something we did not even dream about. I graduated from Harvard Business School and had my mom, sister and husband by my side. I count my blessings everyday and know absolutely how much support from my family, community, mentors, friends, and luck, it took for me to have this learning experience of a lifetime. Writing this to the girl at two - look momma we did it, and it’s only just the beginning.
