I have a dual-boot system using two separate SSDs. One is my primary system on an M2 drive, and my secondary system is on a SATA drive that is in a removable bay. Most of the time I only need to have the M2 drive online and only occasionally I need the secondary system. If I unplug the removable drive and boot the computer, what will happen? I do not want to corrupt the boot manager or have to go into the BIOS settings to fool with the boot parameters. Likewise, if I later reattach the removable drive, will the boot manager and BIOS respond to both OS choices? Both OSs are Windows.

  • Which device is the Bootloader on? What bootloader are you using? Which specific OSes are installed and on which drive? Have you done any research regarding this yourself? Commented Oct 7 at 13:09
  • The boot loader resides on system Disk 0. It contains a UEFI partition. I have Windows 10 installed on 'disk 0. My other disk is system Disk 1 and has Windows 11 installed. Disk 1 is installed in a removable drive bay. This is the disk I would like to remove and reinstall at a later time. I would think that with Disk 1 removed I should continue to see both Windows 10 and Windows 11 appear in the boot window. As long I don't try and boot into Windows 11 with Disk 1 removed, I would think nothing in the bootloader should change. Am I correct? Commented Oct 8 at 14:38

  • If you select boot disk through BIOS/UEFI, there should be no issue. Commented Oct 8 at 21:33
