This fascinating mountainous nation is built alongside expired volcanoes, stunning alpine lakes, including one of the largest in Eurasia, and amazing ancient churches and monasteries that are almost as wonderful to look at as the magnificent scenery in which they are found.
It’s a perfect destination for hikers, or anyone with a sense of adventure, looking for a lesser-discovered wilderness to explore, along with a unique culture, with its Transcaucasian Trail offering close to 500 miles worth of trails from north to south.
Below the mountain trails are some fantastic towns and cities, including the capital Yerevan, known as the “pink city” – home to restaurants serving farm-to-table cuisine from the country’s many rural villages and wines that has been made in Armenia for thousands of years.
Armenia’s seasons each boast unique advantages, making spring, summer, and autumn all ideal times to visit. The long, dry days of June through mid-September are perfect for outdoor activities. For those who prefer fewer crowds, September and October offer prime hiking conditions with minimal rainfall.
Armenia has a varied climate due to its complex topography, but for the most part summer tends to be long and hot, with average temperatures of 25°C (77°F) in June and August. Winter by comparison is short, but can get very cold, with average temperatures of -5°C (23°F) in December and January in the plains and foothills.
Armenian is the nation’s official language, while Russian is also commonly used.
Armenian Standard Time is GMT+4, putting it four hours ahead of the UK, nine hours ahead of New York and 12 hours ahead of LA.
