South America

South America

There really is something for everyone in South America. It is immensely diverse geographically and homes 12 culturally distinct nations, plus a world of cultures beyond that. Big hitters like Rio de Janeiro and Machu Picchu are worth the hype, but don't sleep on the coffee towns of Colombia or jungle treks in Ecuador.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to visit South America right now?
Absolutely. You shouldn't let concerns for safety stop you from exploring this vibrant continent. Most tourists have a wonderful time with no major issues. Just be sure to check latest news and travel guidance before your trip, and remember that safety can vary between different countries, cities and even neighborhoods. So do a little research, avoid risky areas and keep your wits about you. Do that and everything should be fine!
How long should you spend in South America?
There's no upper limit! With so much to explore, you can easily spend several months exploring South America if your circumstances allow. Our tip is not to overstretch. If you want to cover the whole continent, plan for 3-4 months. If you only have one week stick to a single country or region. A full month offers a nice compromise, allowing you to experience multiple cultures in one trip.
How much money should I budget for a 4-month trip to South America?
Depending on the nature and style of your trip, we recommend at least $5,000. That gives you around $1k per month will plenty left over. Budget more if you wish to stay in nicer accommodation, and remember some areas - like Chile and Patagonia - are significantly more expensive than others, like Colombia and Bolivia.
What are the best months to visit South America?
There's no right or wrong answer here, because South America is enormous and incredibly diverse geographically. If you're heading south to Patagonia, consider November to February for milder summer climes. Rio de Janeiro is at its most lively (but also most expensive) during Carnival in February, while May to October is ideal for dry season hikes in Peru and the Central Andes. Tailor your timings to your specific route, but rest easy knowing South America is ultimately a year-round destination.
What is the best country to visit in South America?
We're gonna have to take the fifth on this one! This is simply too difficult to answer. Peru is magical and transportive, Brazil is full of charm and beauty, Argentina pulsates with energy while Uruguay brings laid back vibes. Colombia is all color and coffee, while Ecuador packs arguably the most scenic punch of them all. Then there's Chile, as unique and diverse as any!
What is a must see in South America?
We'll vouch for Salar de Uyuni. Bolivia's gigantic salt flats are truly unmissable, especially in wet season (December to March) when the thin layer of water creates a mirror effect like nothing else on Earth. There are plenty of others, too, of course. The beaches of Rio, the bustling streets of Buenos Aires, the magic of Machu Picchu and the remarkable wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.
What are some hidden gems in South America?
Ecuador is perhaps the most underrated country in South America, with Cotopaxi National Park offering expansive outdoor experiences surrounding the titular volcano. Choquequirao is an alternative to Machu Picchu in Peru, only accessible via a 20-mile jungle hike, while the bays of Florianopolis are just as beautiful as Rio. Fall in love with the cobblestone streets of Barichara in Colombia, and see a different side to South American in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.
What are some natural attractions in South America?
Iguazu Falls, on the Brazil-Argentina border, is the largest waterfall system in the world, while the Amazon Rainforest spans most of the continent's countries and is endlessly explorable. Patagonia is packed with natural wonders, including the surreal Perito Moreno Glacier. Other otherworldly sights include the salt flats of Bolivia and the Atacama Desert in Chile. From mountain peaks to tropical jungles, pristine beaches, glaciers, deserts, valleys, volcanoes - you're never far from natural beauty in South America.
What are the best cities to visit in South America?
Rio de Janeiro is iconic and the energy of Buenos Aires is unlike anything else. Culturally we love Quito in Ecuador and Peruvian cities like Arequipa and Cusco. Montevideo has its own lovely vibe, but we particularly adore the cities of Colombia. Bogota, Medellin and especially Cartagena each bring something totally unique to the table.
