What is the double threat for some of the Northeast Atlantic's most important fish stocks? 🔹Overfishing 🔹Climate change According to the recent advice from the ICES - International Council for the Exploration of the Sea over the past 10 years more than 7.2 million tonnes of Atlantic mackerel, Atlanto-Scandian herring and blue whiting was overfished: https://bit.ly/47s3O5b Why? For years, countries fishing these shared stocks have surpassed the quotas advised by scientists. For Atlantic mackerel, this has resulted in catches exceeding the science-based advice by an average of 32% over the past decade. Combined with the growing impacts of climate change, these stocks face mounting pressure. Overfishing small pelagics in the Northeast Atlantic could put livelihoods, food security and economies at risk.
