Italian Wine and Civilization with Jeremy Parzen, Ph.D.
Wednesday, October 24, $65
6:30 p.m.
Vinoteca
121 East 27th St.
between Park and Lex.
After completing his Ph.D. in Italian at U.C.L.A. in 1997 with a dissertation on medieval Italian poetry and its legacy in early Italian Renaissance printing, Jeremy Parzen moved to New York where he began a career in food and wine writing as the Associate Editor of The Magazine of La Cucina Italiana and the publication’s chief wine writer. He has lived and traveled widely throughout Italy, including Montalcino where he first tasted Brunello di Montalcino and discovered his passion for wine. Although he doesn’t limit his interests solely to enogastronomy, recent publications include: a translation of the fifteenth-century cookery book The Art of Cooking, by Maestro Martino (University of California Press, 2005); “Please Play with Your Food: An Incomplete Survey of Culinary Wonders in Italian Renaissance Cookery” (Gastronomica, Fall, 2004); and his preface to Cucina teorico-pratica by Cavalcanti Ippolito, Duca di Buonvicino (Guido Tommasi Editore, 2002), widely considered the first modern Neapolitan cookery book.
His Italian Wine and Civilization seminar includes readings ranging from Pliny to Petrarch, from Boccaccio to Machiavelli, from Cavour to Ricasoli (Unified Italy’s first two prime ministers) and beyond. Each reading is paired with a wine and class participants are encouraged to share their tasting notes and impressions.
Food and Wine Historian Jeremy Parzen, PhD, will be pouring ten wines and speaking about their relation to Italian civilization and history on Wednesday, October 24. To register, send an email to register@vinosite.com or call 212-725-6516.
