VieVinum 2026 confirms Austria’s international appeal

 –  Between 16 and 18 May, VieVinum once more brought the international wine industry together at the Hofburg in Vienna. The 2026 edition of the fair allowed 500 Austrian wineries to present their wines to an international audience of industry experts. The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Austrian Wine) invited more than 1,000 trade professionals from over 50 different countries to Vienna. These included the world’s best sommeliers, renowned international media and wine importers, as well as a number of leading figures from the global wine industry. Read more

Austrian wine reaches a new milestone in Canada

 –  For the first time ever, Austrian wines have their own clearly designated shelves in the Canadian alcohol monopolies LCBO (Ontario) and SAQ (Québec). This achievement lays the groundwork for the continued development of the up-and-coming Canadian export market. Thanks to the efforts of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Austrian Wine) and Austrian winemakers, the value of exports to Canada has risen more than 500% since 2019. Long-term, forward-looking strategies involving all Austrian players will help build on this success. Read more

Zechmeister appointed to lead Austrian Wine Academy from 2027

 –  Zechmeister will succeed Josef Schuller MW - After 36 years as head of the Weinakademie Österreich (Austrian Wine Academy), Josef “Pepi” Schuller will hand over the reins to Christian Zechmeister, who is currently Managing Director of Wein Burgenland, the Regional Wine Committee of Burgenland and the Authorized Signatory of Weintourismus Burgenland GmbH. The Austrian Wine Academy is a 50% subsidiary of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Austrian Wine). Since the Academy was founded in 1991, more than half a million participants from around the world – from wine amateurs to Masters of Wine – have attended seminars at Europe’s largest wine school. ProWein 2026: Austria on show

 –  Now that ProWein in Düsseldorf has come to a close, there has been some good initial feedback from the Austrian wine industry. Between 15 and 17 March 2026, Austrian wines were met with great enthusiasm by a wide international audience. More than 130 wineries from around Austria presented their products at the most important wine fair in the German-speaking region. The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Austrian Wine) hosted 13 masterclasses on their stand, as well as a busy tasting area where visitors could experience Austrian wines for themselves. On Sunday, Agricultural Minister Norbert Totschnig officially opened the Austrian exhibition space. Read more

2025: Fruit-Driven Wines from a Late-Ripening Vintage

 –  The 2025 vintage promises classic Austrian wines. Both red and white wines are fresh, elegant and fruit-driven, with great varietal typicity and moderate alcohol content. Conditions were also very good for the production of noble sweet wines. Further good news is that following the very low yields of the previous year, the 2025 harvest is expected to exceed 2.5 million hectolitres – slightly above average. This will allow wineries to meet the strong market demand for light and fruit-driven wines. Read more

Sustainable viticulture reaches a record high

 –  Austria continues to reinforce its position as an international leader in environmentally conscious viticulture. As many as 12,324 hectares of vineyards are already being cultivated in compliance with the extensive and independently controlled “Sustainable Austria” programme. This corresponds to 28% of the total area under vine in Austria – an all-time high for the country. In terms of organic viticulture, Austria also leads the way internationally, with 25% of the country’s area under vine being organically certified. Read more

Austrian wine impresses international audience

 –  With a major presence at Wine Paris from 9 to 11 February, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Austrian Wine) set the first strong international marker of the year for Austrian wine. The trade fair has meanwhile established itself as one of the world’s most important wine exhibitions, attracting more than 63,000 visitors from around the globe to Paris this year. Read more
