Common Fraud Schemes

Fraudulent representatives and scammers do sometimes try to get personal information from the public. There are ways you can protect your personal information.

How to Protect Yourself

You have power to protect your own personal information and to report any attempts at fraud. These tips can help.

Before You Enroll

  • Before sharing any personal information, make sure the person is certified by Covered California.
  • If you accept enrollment help from anyone, keep a record of their name, certification number, phone number, address and organization’s website.
  • Never pay for help in filling out the Covered California health insurance application. Enrollment help is available, but never required, and is always free.

Protect Your Personal Information

  • You only need to provide personal information, like a Social Security number, when you’re completing the Covered California enrollment application online or on paper.
  • Pay monthly premiums only to your health insurance company or to a licensed insurance agent. Never pay with cash.

Disclosure of consumers’ confidential information is a violation of federal and state law. Improper disclosure is subject to fines of up to $25,000 under the Affordable Care Act.
