Light interacts with everything and is one of the most important subjects in art. In this tutorial, I want to explain, in simple steps, how to add basic lighting to a tree trunk and the surrounding vegetation. In my final year of high-school, a teacher I greatly admired made a comment that seemingly came out of nowhere and took deep root in my mind. She remarked on her dislike for the word 'gratitude', explaining that it was "a terrible burden to feel indebted". That stuck with me for many, many years. Mostly because I accepted that opinion without question, and even went so far as to try and adopt it. I failed miserably. It took some time to learn to think for myself when it came to people I look up to and admire, as it probably does for most people. As I grew older, met more people, and spent some time in reflection, I realised I didn't agree with my teacher's beliefs about gratitude. It wasn't something burdensome to me because I didn't view it as being detached from thankfulness, or as something owed. Instead, I viewed it as an extension of thankfulness, a culmination of thankfulness. Whereas I can express my thanks to you in words, I can show you my gratitude in acts... of resilience
