Lighting - Tutorial by Syntetyc, journal

Lighting - Tutorial

Nov 3, 2025

Hello everyone! This month's theme is “Lighting”. It is a fascinating subject because light is essential to achieve the desired atmosphere. Light interacts with everything and is one of the most important subjects in art. In this tutorial, I want to explain, in simple steps, how to add basic lighting to a tree trunk and the surrounding vegetation. For the tutorial, I’m using my “*🖌️ Free Environment Brushes 2.0 “, and my “ 🎨 Anime & *Ghibli Style Color Palette 2.0” . And you can download the PSD tutorial file here. ⭐ You are invited for a live Q&A session that will take place on this journal on November 10th at 11AM PST . 👉 JOIN HERE Use the tag #ShineWithSyntetyc to earn the exclusive badge ⭐ Let’s start! 1 - Paint the background. Fill the background with a dark green or blue shade. With the “ 🖌️ Airsoft” brush, and darker shade, paint vertical lines, like background trees. Don’t worry about precision. 2 - Draw a cylinder In a new layer, with the “ 🖌️ Rounded Sketch”

Drawing a peacock's head, a tutorial

Sep 3, 2024

September's theme is peacocks! This tutorial, sponsored by Deviantart, will show you how to draw a peacock's handsome head! The art here was done using Photoshop, with a hard brush, set on black, for the first outlines. These steps can also be done using a plain ol' pencil and paper! Further real media steps will be shown at the end of this journal. First step: All birds start with an egg... Add a beak to the lumpy egg... The second illustration shows the shape of the lower jaw and wattles, but you will need to draw it in place, under the head. The lower jaw in place. Add the eye, lines to indicate eyelids, wrinkles, and neck. The topknot is fan-shaped and sprouts from the bump on the back of the head. Nostril The illustration below shows the general position of the facial markings. Now you can add the basic colors, In Photoshop I created a new layer and set it to "multiply". This allows the lines of your drawing to show through the color. I painted the colors in with the

Horse Head Tutorial

Jun 2, 2025

Hi everyone! I hope you're in the mood to draw a majestic horse portrait, because that is this month's tutorial theme, sponsored by DeviantArt! If you follow along and create your own horse portrait, make sure to submit your deviation with the hashtag #HorseHeadTutorial to earn the profile badge: Tools I'm drawing this horse portrait digitally in Photoshop, but I'm sure you can follow along with any digital art program you use. You can also draw traditionally, though maybe some improvisation is needed in some steps, but you got this! I used only three brushes for this artwork, starting with a simple hard brush for the sketch, and two textured brushes for the colouring and the background. However, you could really use any brush you're comfy with Step 1. Let's start this portrait with the simple shapes of the head (consisting of the cheek and nose area) and the shoulders and neck. It's good practice to work rather quickly in this first rough stage, so your view on it stays

Yeti Tutorial - Q&A: December 10th at 6PM MNT - CLICK HERE #YetiTutorial Step 1 - Initial sketch People say they can only draw a stickman. For me thats where I start. Just some basicshapes and lines as the foundation for what comes next. The pose I had in mind was sort of a boxing pose. Step 2 - Form Start figuring out the anatomy with blocky shapes. Thinking 3-dimensionally, adding thickness and heft. Simple shapes. Block out the form. Step 3 - Layering Just start filling details and mass be loose don't worry about mistakes. Hopefully for your own work you already know what you're going to draw so you don't have to worry about design. Follow your guidelines. This will reveal whether your initial sketch work. You'll see right away if there is anything that doesn't work. i work digitally. so I'll lower the opacity of my current layer and start redrawing. Adding detail, refining. You can also start to erase the guides as you see fit. I'd say my type of illustration is

Tutorial: Draw an Arctic Fox!

Nov 6, 2024

It's November, and winter is coming - or has come - for most of us. So what better creature to draw than an arctic fox, all poofy in their winter fur? (And even if winter isn't coming your way, who can resist them?) Because that's what we'll be doing! And if you follow the steps and post your artwork with the hashtag #ArcticFoxTutorial, you'll also get a special badge: I have drawn this with your good old graphite pencil and some colored pencils, but you can obviously use other traditional and digital media as well Without further ado, let's begin! Step 1: Draw a circle, and divide it into four parts. Step 2: Let's get the most important details added, namely the eyes and the nose. The top of the nose should be halfway between the center and the lower edge of the circle. Also remember that arctic foxes, like other foxes, have small noses compared to dogs and wolves! Step 3: Time to add the muzzle! Each whisker pad is a nosewidth wide, and has a rounded "smiling" shape. I've

How to draw Minty The Garden Dragon!

Jul 1, 2024

The theme for this month is Garden Dragons! 🌱 For this tutorial I will be featuring Minty The Mint Dragon as one of my favorite Garden Dragons to draw! Follow the steps and create your own artwork! Post your drawing on DeviantArt with the tag #GardenDragonTutorial and get a Profile badge! I mainly sketch my work in Painter SAI2. A lot of my color work is done in Corel Painter using the "Mona Lisa" brush. :bulletgreen: What is a Garden Dragon? A garden dragon is a plant-like dragon that lives in a garden pot. I originally called them "Bonsai Dragons." I have evolved them since the first creation of Bonsai Dragon and have made several different variations of them like Minty Dragon. :bulletgreen: Why this art style? I love to read and make comics of my own and have developed this cute art style to fit my very own comic that I run called Lucky Dragon and Friends. I post this comic regularly here on DeviantArt as well as on WebToon. Some of the recent episodes of my comic
