They call it "sports equinox": the very brief window when North America's major professional sports leagues are all playing at the same time. That's coming up, and so is Additive Manufacturing Strategies! Find out what one thing has to do with the other in the latest edition of AMS: The Preprint:

A special week in NYC. 🗽 Thanks, Dana McCallum and Kelley McCarroll-Gilbert, for representing Carbon at Ralph Lauren’s Innovation Day during Climate Week and sharing what’s possible with Carbon technology across fashion and beyond.

Last week was a pretty special one. 🥳 I had the chance to present at Ralph Lauren’s Innovation Day alongside my colleague, Kelley McCarroll-Gilbert, on my birthday. We connected with RL executives and other leading brands and people across the fashion industry about how Carbon can help create better-performing products at scale. Feeling incredibly grateful for another year, the people I get to work alongside, and experiences like this that allow us to share what we’re building at Carbon. 38 is off to a pretty great start. ✨

Move faster from concept to commercialization. Carbon helps MedTech teams iterate quickly without the delays and costs of traditional tooling, making it easier to test, refine, and advance designs toward production. Fewer barriers between idea and finished design. More freedom to iterate along the way. See how Carbon can help accelerate your path to market. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gxnVRfWe

The team at Sherpa Design did a great job showing what functional iteration can look like with Carbon. By using Carbon DLS™ and production grade materials, their team was able to develop and evaluate robotic end effectors around real performance needs like grip, flexibility, wear, fatigue, and assembly. We love seeing thoughtful engineering like this take advantage of what the Carbon platform makes possible!

End effectors, the little grippy fingers on a robotic arm, need to push, pull, twist, sense, cushion, and grip, not to mention survive thousands of cycles of regular use. End effectors are usually a mix of rigid and  elastomeric parts; iterating on prototypes that serve as an accurate facsimile for the real thing is challenging, and making them through traditional methods gets expensive fast. In the case of these pneumatically-actuated end effectors, the clamping force is controlled by the end effector itself.  3D-printing was an obvious solution for iterating on this, but not all printers or materials are equal. As Carbon design partners, we’ve found the Carbon DLS process allows us to iterate with parts that replicate production-like mechanical performance, and evaluate grip, friction, wear, and fatigue, beyond just testing for fit and finish. By designing for 3D-printing, we were able to incorporate custom snap fits to reduce assembly time, and create tunable, latticed pads to dial in surface area, flexibility, and interference on the end effectors. The shortcomings of our prototypes mirrored the failures we would expect to see in the final part,  and we were able to quickly move from testing our first concepts to having validated hardware in a matter of days. #Robotics #EndEffectors #Grippers #CarbonDLS #AdditiveManufacturing #ProductDevelopment #DfAM #EngineeringDesign #RoboticsEngineering #SherpaDesign

🐾I recently had a conversation with a $40B+ company that stopped me in my tracks. They told us they love Carbon ’s materials — specifically EPX resins — because they’re getting mechanical properties they simply haven’t been able to achieve with other additive technologies. But what stood out most was how they view Carbon: Not only as a prototyping technology. They see Carbon as a way to move from functional prototypes → validation and certification → production. That distinction matters. For years, additive manufacturing has been associated with speed and prototyping. But the bigger opportunity is enabling engineers to design, test, validate and ultimately manufacture products differently. When you combine great design freedom with materials engineered for real-world performance, AM becomes much more than a prototyping tool. So if you’re developing your next product, I’d challenge you to ask: What could we design differently if additive manufacturing wasn’t just for the prototype — but part of the path to production? That’s where I believe Carbon gets really exciting. #AdditiveManufacturing #ProductDevelopment #Engineering #Manufacturing #Carbon3D #3dprinting
