Sharing Excess rescues more than 2,000,000 lbs. of food per week, and distributes to local food pantries.

About us

At Sharing Excess, we believe that good food should never go to waste. Every year in America, billions of meals are thrown away while millions of people go hungry. We’re here to change that. By partnering with grocery stores, wholesalers, farmers, and other food producers, we recover and redirect surplus food to communities who need it most. What started in 2018 as a college project has become one of the fastest-growing food rescue organizations in America. Today, we distribute nearly 2 million pounds of food each week, 100 million pounds annually, through a national network of food banks and community partners—making food recovery smarter, faster, and more impactful than ever before. With the energy of a startup and the soul of a grassroots movement, we’re redesigning the food system for long-term sustainability and efficiency. Through custom technology, data-driven logistics, and a team of problem-solvers who lead with heart, we’re building a future where food is shared—not wasted.

Our latest potato rescue update is on track 1 million views on Instagram. 💚 It all started with a single photo from a farmer in Idaho: 12 million pounds of potatoes split between a few warehouses, all perfectly good, all at risk at going to waste. We flew out to see it, then got to work. As word spread, more farms reached out. By the end, we had rescued over 17 million pounds from nine farms across Idaho and Montana. We moved them to food banks, pantries, churches, and community organizations across the country, who shared them with their communities. That rescue is part of a bigger milestone. Thanks to our donors and partners, Sharing Excess has provided 100 million meals in just 8 months. We're grateful to get to do this work, and there are more rescues on the horizon. Watch how it came together👇

  • Today is Hunger Action Day, and we're holding our biggest Day of Sharing Excess pop-ups ever. Across Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and Detroit, we're distributing close to 20,000 pounds of free food directly to communities. We're proud of the work we're doing today, but we also know there is so much more we can do. In America, more than 40% of our food supply goes uneaten. Even a fraction of that food could make a meaningful difference for people experiencing food insecurity. The food is there. The challenge is getting it to the people who need it. That's what we've spent the last 8 years building: the people, logistics, technology, and partnerships to move that food quickly and get it where it can do the most good. And now, we need to go faster. For $10 a month (≈ 1 Venti Cold Foam Latte) you can provide enough meals to feed a neighbor for a whole month. • September is Hunger Action Month, so we set up an anonymous letter box and asked our community one simple question: “What does free food mean to you?” We got dozens of responses. These are some of our favorite. When people have consistent access to fresh and healthy food, the result goes beyond just being full. It takes people out of survival mode, and allows them to focus time, energy, and resources elsewhere; often to one another. Life is better when its shared #SharingExcess #HungerActionMonth

A new Guinness World Record, set entirely with rescued produce. On August 8, Sharing Excess helped distribute 543,501 pounds of rescued fruits and vegetables in just 24 hours at Ugly Potato Day in Surrey, British Columbia, setting a new world record for the largest donation of fresh fruits and vegetables in 24 hours. Ugly Potato Day began in 2022, when farmer Tyler Heppell started giving cosmetically imperfect produce to his community rather than sending it to landfill. This year, more than 30,000 people attended the event, where produce from 25 farms was given away for free throughout the day. And the impact goes well beyond one day: Sharing Excess now rescues and distributes 2–4 million pounds of food each week, rescuing more than 300 million pounds since 2018. Congratulations to Sharing Excess, Odd Bunch, and all the people who made this record-breaking day possible! 👉 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/edsF8vQx #FoodWaste #FoodRescue #FoodWasteSolutions #FoodSecurity #SustainableFoodSystems Evan Ehlers Victoria Wilson

  • This Hunger Action Month, Sharing Excess is setting an ambitious goal: to provide 200,000 additional meals. The U.S. produces more than enough food, but millions of pounds of it never reach a plate because it's the wrong shape, it can't be sold in time, or the market can't absorb it. At the same time, 1 in 7 households across the country face food insecurity. The food itself is free. What costs money is getting it out of the supply chain, onto trucks, and into the communities that need it. That's exactly what we do every day. $1 helps provide 12 meals, and every dollar donated goes directly toward reaching our goal. Interested in supporting us this Hunger Action Month? California, update: After rescuing 70 million pounds of food in the last 18 months, Sharing Excess is officially launching a new warehouse in Los Angeles. Tag food businesses to donate food, community organizations who need food, and funders to help make this happen. 💚

  • A world record is an incredible milestone for Sharing Excess, but what makes it even more meaningful is what it took to get there. This year, alongside Tyler Heppell and Ugly Potato Day, 543,502 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables moved in 24 hours, setting a new Guinness World Record. 🏆 We’re incredibly proud to hold this record, and even more proud of what it represents: 30,000 families going home with a full fridge of fresh food because of this one day. The record is a huge milestone for Sharing Excess. The impact behind it is what makes it so meaningful. That’s what we’re here for. 💚

Surrey, British Columbia, made history when 246,528.61 kg (543,502 lb 8.8 oz) of fresh fruit and vegetables were donated in a single 24-hour period, breaking the previous record set 10 years ago in 2016. The historic donation was achieved by Odd Bunch, Sharing Excess, and Tony Robbins at Ugly Potato Day, an initiative started in 2022 by farmer Tyler Heppell to fight food insecurity by giving away his family farm's "ugly," cosmetically imperfect vegetables rather than letting them go to waste. More than 25 farms across Canada and the USA contributed to this year’s event, with produce ranging from carrots and tomatoes to avocados, berries, and mangoes, turning surplus produce into real relief for the community. 💙

  • We just broke a Guinness World Record for the largest donation of fruits and vegetables in 24 hours! 🏆🥔💚 546,000 pounds of surplus produce, shared for free with over 35,000 people. Made possible with Tyler Heppell, Odd Bunch, and Tony Robbins. By celebrating and not stigmatizing sharing free food with communities, we believe this can be the model for the future of food redistribution. Watch how the day unfolded. 👇

This Saturday, we’re attempting something that’s never been done before. Together with Sharing Excess and Potato Ty, we’re hosting the largest free food distribution in history and attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest donation of fruits and vegetables in 24 hours. We’ll distribute over 500,000 pounds of fresh, rescued produce—the equivalent of more than 400,000 meals—to 30,000 individuals and families, completely free, at Ugly Potato Day by Odd Bunch. If you’re near Surrey, BC, Canada, grab your free ticket below and come be part of history👊💚🚛🥔

  • We promised to rescue 12 million pounds of potatoes, and ultimately broke that promise. Because we ended up actually rescuing 15.2 million pounds! In partnership with PotatoTy (Tyler Heppell) and Tony Robbins, we mobilized hundreds of truckloads, moved food to hundreds of food banks and pantries across the country, and just completed the largest charity-funded farm rescue in US history! Thank you to the donors, drivers, and community organizations who showed up at every step along the way. 🥔💚
