Load growth is outpacing traditional grid infrastructure timelines, and demand flexibility is often still evaluated as a program rather than a resource. In an article published in the September edition of Smart Electric Power Alliance's magazine, Public Utilities Fortnightly, Adam Farabaugh, Director of Market Development at Uplight, breaks down what it takes to plan demand flexibility with the same rigor as conventional infrastructure: time, location, dependable performance, and cost comparison. Residential VPPs are scaling in New Jersey. PSEG's GridSmart Battery Program with Uplight gives customers a $5,000 incentive toward a qualifying home battery, plus up to $25,000 in interest-free on-bill repayment. Enrolled batteries can be called on during scheduled events to ease peak demand, and the pilot will inform the state's statewide VPP framework. Uplight hosted Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera at Uplight HQ for a firsthand look at how customer-side flexibility becomes reliable grid capacity. As load growth becomes real, the cheapest, fastest capacity isn't a new power plant — it's the flexibility already sitting in homes and businesses. Smart thermostats, home batteries, EV chargers, and commercial loads, orchestrated into virtual power plants that shave peaks, strengthen reliability, and put money back in customers' pockets. And we're just getting started, with our most recent investment from Octopus Energy, Uplight is entering its next phase of growth with a goal of $1 billion in customer savings and 20 GW of flexible capacity over the next five years — turning customer-side resources into reliable, utility-scale capacity. Thank you, Lt. Governor Primavera, for spending the morning with us — and for your leadership on energy affordability and reliability in Colorado and beyond. Proud to be based in Boulder! Thanks to Hannah Bascom, nick chaset, Dave Sheehan, Liz Lindow, Laura Fletcher, Katie Thompson, Jill Johnson, Lindsey Keefe Meehan, and Natasha Crowe, PMP for showing her around.
