Andreas Schmidt (MSEE), LION, TopLinked,[3555++] liked thisAfter 32 years working in the FPGA industry I have decided to retire. I had a lot of adventures over the years as FPGAs have always been on the bleeding edge with the most advanced process node with the latest interfaces to carve out their niche in the semiconductor space. When you have engineers that execute brilliantly you have a great product and when you miss even a tiny bit you have 3-4 years of painful support until the next product can be developed. After leaving Amdahl as an ECL gate array CPU designer in 1994 I joined a startup company, Crosspoint Solutions, that had recently released a CMOS anti-fuse FPGA. It was quite unique as the programming was done at the transistor level and thus was a real Field Programmable Gate Array with the anti-fuses essentially replacing metal masks. This led me to join Xilinx working on the XC8100 family that was also a CMOS anti-fuse FPGA. We did get the XC8100 into production, but there wasn't a technically viable path forward to continuously shrink the anti-fuses for future process nodes. The XC8100 team led by Erich Goetting merged with the Denali next-gen architecture team led by Steve Young and the result was the first Virtex family. Virtex became the foundation for the next 20 years of Xilinx products with multiple I/O standards, clock DLLs/PLLs, larger memory blocks, high speed transceivers, DSP blocks and embedded processors. New families, new process nodes, new features, ever faster I/O and transceivers, and an expanding customer base every 24-36 months kept me extremely busy trying to stay in front of all it with boards, user guides, app notes, and SI/PI issues. In addition to Erich and Steve, I was able to work with industry standouts including Peter Alfke, Austin Lesea, Rina Raman and Dr Howard Johnson. It was amazing, it was fun, and it was rewarding. Rina recruited me to Intel PSG when I left Xilinx and I thought it would be intriguing to learn about the other half of the industry. Within the first 4 months and barely up to speed on Altera tools and Stratix 10, Rina shipped me off to Finland to work on a critical customer issue. It was a trial by fire with thrice daily coordination between the EU, US, and Penang, but we succeeded in resolving the issues, enabled customer production and cemented a long term relationship. Three years ago I moved back into a management role, first with a small team handling applications for Direct-RF and MAG customers which grew quickly into the larger Platform and Interfaces Apps and then last year the full North America Factory Apps team. There were many organizational and technical challenges, but we worked through each of them and the team is better having gone through the and are setup for success. I wish my team and Altera all the best and a speedy path to an eventual IPO.

Andreas Schmidt (MSEE), LION, TopLinked,[3555++] liked this👏 NVIDIA released ingest, a microservice designed for extracting content and metadata efficiently from thousands of documents like PDFs, Word, and PowerPoint. It uses NVIDIA NIM microservices to efficiently parse and extract text, tables, charts, and images, making it ideal for downstream applications. NVIDIA Ingest splits documents into pages, classifies content, and uses optical character recognition (OCR) to convert it into a structured JSON format. It can also compute embeddings for the extracted content and store them in a vector database like Milvus. The service supports various extraction methods to balance throughput and accuracy, such as pdfium, Unstructured.io, and Adobe Content Extraction Services for PDFs. It also offers pre and post-processing operations, including text splitting, filtering, and embedding generation. 🔗 Repo: https://lnkd.in/eMmNwzF9 ⤵ Helpful? If you haven't used the pythonic SiliconCompiler yet, you don't know what you are missing! Over the last 2 years, Peter Gadfort has quietly filled out the feature set in SiliconCompiler and it is (in my opinion) the most complete ASIC built tool in the world (including internal siloed tools @ company A,B,C,...). SiliconCompiler also includes the world's most complete OpenROAD reference flow, supporting among other things: gui integration, synthesis, placement, cts, routing, pad ring generation RDL routing, automated power grids, ir-drop analysis, floor planning, GDS export/merging, power analysis, metal fill insertion, antenna fixes, automated ML metrics extraction. Oh yeah, and it's FREE!! Install SiliconCompiler: $ python3 -m pip install --upgrade siliconcompiler Install all the open source tools (NEW!) $ sc-install -group asic Silicon Compiler Sources: https://lnkd.in/g53229mz If you want to help Peter Gadfort, please know that he is hiring! https://lnkd.in/e6PiNxRK

Brayton passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025. He was with his family at their home in Berkeley. He was 91. Bob was one of the fathers of logic synthesis. He also made seminal contributions in formal verification and circuit simulation. After a successful career at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, he made a late-stage career move to join the Berkeley EECS faculty. Bob, along with Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli and the late Richard Newton, built the logic synthesis CAD group at Berkeley. Subsequently, Bob brought formal verification to Berkeley, starting with a collaboration with the late Robert Kurshan. Bob won the Phil Kaufman award in 2007. Bob mentored about 50 graduate students including many that joined Cadence and Synopsys Inc in their early years of formation. He and his wife Ruth instilled many lifelong lessons into his students. Thinking from first principles and learning with humility were some of these. I owe my career to Bob. Before meeting him, I was about to quit Berkeley in the middle of my PhD program. I would not have been introduced to formal verification had Bob not decided to study and research formal verification.

The crazy part? You can link two units to handle 405B parameter models 🤯 For the perspective, OpenAI's GPT-4o is around 200B parameters while Grok-1 by xAI had 314B parameters. Jensen Huang is single-handedly bringing data center-class AI computing to individual users. Incredible. the REALSENSE, Intel Corporation’s depth-sensing camera division, has officially spun off into an independent company, signaling Intel’s continued strategic shift amid broader restructuring and renewed AI ambitions. Once a symbol of Intel’s innovation beyond processors, RealSense now begins a new chapter. The newly independent company will focus on #AI, #robotics, #biometrics, and #computervision — key growth areas Intel is now supporting from the sidelines. It has secured $50 million in Series A funding from Intel Capital and the MediaTek Innovation Fund. RealSense technologies are already embedded in 60% of autonomous #mobile and #humanoid robots worldwide. With 3,000+ clients and over 80 patents, it remains a global force in computer vision. Partners include Unitree Robotics, FIT:MATCH.ai, and ANYbotics. Intel’s move reflects a broader refocus. Under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel is shedding non-core units like RealSense to streamline and double down on #foundry and #edgeAI. Yet, Intel’s backing here shows it still sees promise in the robotics and vision space. For a deeper understanding of the latest semiconductor technologies, read my new book, Semiconductor For All.
