Bill Carlson shared thisWas great to catch up with friends Khern and Elaine. We all met as graduate students before our kids were born -- see how long ago that was by the size of the kids to the right. They both have long and distinguished careers. Right now Khern is head of the Institute for Southeast Asia Studies so we got to compare notes on world events and SE Asian politics. Elaine was just appointed executive director of the Singapore Arts Council. We had a robust conversation about the importance of the arts in an innovation economy. Before working on St Pete and Tampa arts strategies, I was deeply involved in the Singapore arts scene. We will be comparing arts notes again soon.

Bill Carlson liked thisBill Carlson liked thisAt the museum, whimsy is afoot This past weekend, we hosted the 15th Annual Night at the Museum. At a Halloween celebration, I expected costumes and candy and the predictable sugar-induced mischief. The Tampa Bay History Center team had organized face painting, excellent superhero photo ops, and many pirates in salty character. But what I hadn’t fully understood was how the galleries and artifacts themselves would be much more than mere backdrops (clearly, I need to rewatch the film that inspired the event’s name, I know). Children always enjoy encountering the pirates in our exhibits, but when those children are already in a mode of whimsy, creativity, exploration, and adventure, the experience is even more heightened. Kids love the life-size cabin in our A Land Remembered exhibit, but when they are dressed up as fairies and Dora the Explorer, the intense joy is over the top. Bill Carlson liked thisBill Carlson liked thisJourney to 60: HERE WE ARE!! Today, I’m 60. There. I said it. I must say… it’s not so bad! It’s been an incredible year of reflection. Sharing pieces of my life with friends and colleagues has kept me accountable for that reflection and growth. It came with some discomfort because sharing is personal—and professionally, we’re taught not to do that, right? Don’t mix the two. Well, I did. And it’s been fun, rewarding, and an opportunity to deepen relationships. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the conversations, the comparisons of aches and pains, and the support along the way! Writing about the craziness of everyday life has brought both tears and laughter. No regrets. Here’s what I’ve discovered this year: It’s OK to have more to give. Age certainly doesn’t define your ability. It’s OK to feel what you feel. It’s OK to seek growth and deepen friendships. Most importantly, it’s always OK to put family and your own wellness first. No explanation, no apologies. Through it all, faith has carried me. I have asked God for direction, sometimes while holding very specific opinions about what the answer should be. I am learning to listen. Some days, of course, are better than others. My work has brought additional responsibility and opportunity. I remain excited by it—watching the Gunster/Arrow families grow and being part of it, helping clients invest in the Southeast, serving on boards, exploring the possibilities at Stetson, and seeing folks find opportunity and connection through FWELF. I care deeply about what comes next and who will have the chance to help shape it. The rebrand of FWELF is coming soon, bringing additional excitement and a national perspective. Today, I just feel so grateful. I also feel the absence of people I wish were here. I deeply miss my siblings. My sister, Azizeh, would have driven miles to be here. I wish she could be. And I’m grateful for my sister friends, who show up with love and make everything so special. To everyone who has read these reflections, shared a memory, or told me something honest about your own journey: thank you. You have helped make this birthday feel less like a number I was approaching and more like a life I have the privilege of sharing. This is my last Journey to 60 blog. It feels a little strange to close it. We're just turning a page. I have enjoyed having a reason to pause, look back, and share life best I could. Thank you for all the well wishes. Onward…

Bill Carlson liked thisBill Carlson liked thisThirty-three years ago today, I arrived at Raymond James as a recent college graduate with a phone, a list of prospects, and a lot to learn. Since then, I've had the opportunity to be a cold caller, an advisor, a leader, and most importantly, a supporter of the incredible financial advisors and their teams who help clients achieve their goals every day. As a native Bostonian who grew up in Atlanta during the Celtics' heyday in the 1980s, I have to admit I've been looking forward to No. 33 for a while. More importantly, what makes me most proud is the impact. The impact financial advisors have on families, the impact Raymond James associates have on their communities, and the impact that trusted relationships can have on someone's life. In an era increasingly defined by AI, automation, and endless self-service options, I'm more convinced than ever that the future belongs to organizations that combine innovation with genuine human connection. Technology will continue to change how we work. It should, but trust, empathy, judgment, and personal relationships remain irreplaceable. That's why I'm as excited about the future of Raymond James today as I was on my first day 33 years ago. And if these first 33 years have taught me anything, it's this: while technology will continue to transform our industry, the power of personal relationships will always be at the heart of why we matter.
