Chris Daniel shared thisI attended the “Innovating Our Health and Wellness” session today hosted by Chicago Innovation and left with a few powerful takeaways about where health and wellness innovation is really headed. The panel featured insights from Luke Saunders, Alyssa Jaffee, Anil Saldanha, Kevin Cureton, Steven Collens, and moderated by Suzet McKinney, DrPH, MPH. Here were my biggest takeaways: 1. The real goal is healthspan, not lifespan. We are getting better at helping people live longer. But we are not getting better at helping them live healthier. The next frontier is extending the quality of life, not simply the number of years. 2. Technology is not the limiting factor. Adoption is. One panelist described a system that could predict health problems before they occur. The technology worked. But hospitals and insurers resisted adoption because preventing illness reduced their revenue. Innovation often fails not because it cannot be built, but because the system is not designed to use it. 3. The incentives in healthcare are still misaligned. The discussion around value-based care vs. fee-for-service came up repeatedly. When payment models reward more procedures instead of better outcomes, innovation that improves health can actually face resistance. 4. Consumers are becoming the most powerful force in healthcare. The rise of the “informed health consumer” was a central theme. People increasingly rely on sources like WebMD and “Dr. Google” before seeing a doctor. This shift toward self-education will fundamentally reshape how care is delivered. 5. Nutrition and lifestyle remain the biggest opportunity for transformation. When the audience was asked which area needs the most innovation, diet and nutrition dominated the response. At the same time, panelists warned about overhyped trends like supplements and “quick result” solutions. 6. Climate and health are deeply connected. The conversation also highlighted emerging environmental risks, including studies showing microplastics appearing in human biology and climate pressures affecting the production of fruits and vegetables. 7. Startups are attacking a broken system. The healthcare system’s complexity creates enormous opportunity for innovators. But the biggest challenge for startups is not invention. It is navigating and integrating into a system that was not built for rapid change. My biggest takeaway: The next wave of health innovation will not be defined by new technology. It will be defined by new incentives, new behaviors, and a more informed consumer driving change. A few themes showed up consistently across sessions and side conversations. 1. Content is still king. As AI and LLMs reshape discovery and commerce, brands are realizing that high-quality content is what positions them in the market and in the models. 2. The conversation has shifted from pilots to outcomes. The focus is no longer experimentation or writing code. Leaders are now asking a simpler question: what measurable results are we driving? 3. Top talent is becoming the differentiator. The ability to attract and deploy world-class product, data, and AI talent is quickly becoming a strategic priority. 4. Organizations must evolve faster. Traditional structures are struggling to keep pace with the speed of change. More nimble, cross-functional operating models are emerging. One thing I found notable: very little conversation about specific products or technologies. The discussion has moved higher up the stack toward strategy, capability, and execution. Chris Daniel shared thisI will be joining the Retail & Consumer Goods Analytics Study Panel at Analytics Unite this year, a conversation I had the opportunity to be part of last year as well. One theme continues to emerge across retail and CPG…the gap is not strategy…it is execution. Over the past year, our Toptal team has seen continued investment in analytics and rapid acceleration in AI adoption. Teams are growing. Tools are expanding. Ambition is high. And yet, many organizations are still struggling to translate that into real, measurable impact. The patterns we discussed last year are still showing up today: - Fragmented data and disconnected systems - Siloed operating models that slow decision-making - Talent gaps that limit the ability to operationalize AI - Strong pilots… that never fully scale This is not a technology problem. It is a structural one. Most organizations are still trying to solve a speed problem with static teams and rigid models. What is needed instead is enterprise agility, the ability to bring together the right expertise, at the right time, and execute without friction. The goal for this project: give IBMers a way to create event and communications graphics that are on-brand, without needing design experience, software, or a designer's time. That v1 worked. So I pushed further. IBM Compose is the v2—a full internal web app I designed in Figma and vibe coded with Bob.
