Dave Thomson reacted on thisDave Thomson reacted on thisSPOTLIGHT: Meet CU Boulder History graduate, Kira K. Rooney! Kira’s unique educational journey spans both sides of the Atlantic. While pursuing her undergraduate degree in Marketing from the University of Colorado Boulder (MKTG ’12) a fateful semester abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland sparked an interest in Scottish history. After many years in corporate marketing, her passion for Scottish history won out and led her back to CU in 2015 for an Honors degree in History where she completed an undergraduate thesis examining Canadian advertising and settlement schemes that influenced mass migrations from Scotland to Canada between the wars, titled "Demographic Engineering: Post-War Canadian Advertising and Scottish Migration, 1919-1929." (2017) She recently completed her Masters (MLitt) in Scottish History at the University of Dundee in Scotland, where she researched early 20th century emigration from the Isle of Lewis to North America and the vital role of Scottish associationalism in immigrant communities. Throughout her academic pursuits, Kira maintained a career in marketing. She admits that she can see the confusion on some peoples’ faces when she mentions her career background in marketing and academic pursuits in history. However, she doesn’t see the disciplines as all that different from each other. Both disciplines require research and analysis to make informed and accurate conclusions, thrive on empathy and the ability to put yourself in another’s shoes, and necessitate articulation, communication and storytelling skills. In fact, Kira attributes much of her success in the corporate world to what she learned as a history student at CU and encourages anyone interested in a history degree to pursue it with confidence that you’re learning valuable skills for just about any career. Kira currently runs a small freelancing business while she searches for academic opportunities and contributes to the St. Andrew’s Society of Colorado as an in-house historian.
