Today is my last day at
Character.AI
Looking back at the run from January 2025 to now, what stands out is the pace at which this team moves. In that window, this incredibly smart team shipped AvatarFX, Scenes, and Streams; built Feed, the first AI-native social feed; rebuilt memory so long stories hold together better; launched countless new models; and, most recently, moved into microdramas and original programming with (
c.ai) Series. All of it while serving a scaled and highly engaged global audience.
I am likewise proud of the work we did to both grow revenue and rationalize the costs of running a consumer AI platform. What we've built this year is genuinely rare. We got serious about monetization, and the results speak for themselves. That kind of growth doesn't happen by accident. It happens because this team stayed focused and held each other to a high standard.
Partnering with demand-side partners including
Google,
Liftoff Mobile,
Moloco,
Meta, and others allowed us to rapidly grow revenue. Thanks to partnerships with
DigitalOcean and
AMD, we made huge strides diversifying our inference stack, providing us with optionality and better economics.
I'm equally proud of a harder call: removing open-ended chat for under-18 users and building age-assurance and crisis-support partnerships to back it up. It was the first move of its kind in our category and, more importantly, the right thing to do. Not many teams get the chance to set a standard for an entire industry. This one did.
Finally, thank-yous. This role reached across a lot of the company, which means I owe a lot of people - too many to name here:
To Dominic Perella and
Karandeep Anand, for their tireless leadership and for bringing me to Character in an expansive role that let me touch so many parts of the business.
To
Andy N. and the entire M10N team, for the hustle to grow revenue as aggressively as we have with the resources we had.
To
Devin M. and
Maor B., and the endlessly creative product team for being willing partners in every pitch to studios, publishers, and brands.
To
Deniz Demir and the unflappable infra teams, for working with me to land the most favorable compute deals possible (h/t
James Groeneveld and
Yichao(Roger) SHEN as well).
To the
JSA+Partners team for all their strategic guidance.
To
Kenneth 🗽 Pirman, Amanda Yang,
Jeff Misenti,
Daniel Rogoff and
Esther B. for keeping it lively in the NYC office.
To
Romy Christensen, for always asking the right questions.
And to
David Rothenberg and
John Chatowski, for being willing co-pilots of every deal, negotiation, and subplot.
Thanks for the adventure, and I will figure out how to keep the baked goods coming!
