Dhruv Khanna shared thisBrought my wife to the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago this week, wanted her to see where a lot of this journey started, and showed her around the property a bit. Completely by chance, ran into part of the banquet team I worked alongside back in 2009. It's a strange, wonderful feeling. Standing in the same building 15+ years later, this time as a GM opening a hotel of my own, looking at the same faces that helped shape how I show up to this work every day. Hospitality has a way of doing that. You move cities, change properties, take on bigger roles, but the people who trained you, pushed you, and had your back early on stay with you. Some of the best lessons I ever got weren't in a training manual, they were on a banquet floor at 11pm with this crew. Dhruv Khanna reposted thisDhruv Khanna reposted thisSixteen years apart. Same two people. The photo on the left is from my graduation. Dhruv Khanna was there that day. We had studied Hospitality Management together, both of us convinced we were going to build careers in an industry we loved. Dhruv meant it. I thought I did. The photo on the right is from this past week. Dhruv is the General Manager of Recess Hotel and Club in Savannah, a boutique lifestyle property set to open soon. I lasted about a year and a half in the hospitality industry before I had to be honest with myself. The work was not the problem and neither was the industry. The problem was that I was sitting in a seat that was made for someone else. I could do the job. I just was not built for it the way Dhruv is built for it. Leaving felt like failure at the time. It was not. It was the most accurate thing I had done in a while. There is a concept called GWC that I use constantly with leadership teams. Do you genuinely GET the role, do you truly WANT it, and do you have the CAPACITY to do it at the level it requires. All three have to be true. One or two is not enough. Dhruv had all three from day one. I had maybe one. Knowing that changed everything. We started in the same place sixteen years ago. Took completely different roads. And ended up on a job site in Savannah together last week.

I am deeply humbled to be recognized alongside an extraordinary group of Colombians who have dedicated themselves to serving others. It was a celebration of community, leadership, and service. Having my wife, Michelle Medina, by my side made this moment even more meaningful. Thank you for your endless love and support. It was also an honor to celebrate with the Consul General of Colombia, representatives from La Cancillería de Colombia, members of Chicago's diplomatic community, and many dear friends. This recognition reminded me of something I never take for granted: no one succeeds alone. Throughout my journey, I have been blessed with incredible mentors, friends, colleagues, and a community that has believed in me, challenged me, and opened doors along the way. For the next six weeks, I’ll have the privilege of serving as General Manager aboard The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection on a special assignment, sailing from Dublin through the Nordics to Iceland. Excited for the people I’ll meet, the places we’ll discover, and the memories we’ll create before returning home to The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai . Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
