Jessie Jakes 🖤 reposted thisJessie Jakes 🖤 reposted thisSo I did a thing last night. A one minute stand-up comedy routine in front of 125+ people. It was part of my friend Jessie Jakes 🖤 brand new, incredible comedy experience show about work, "Work Is A Joke". While being on stages and using humor has always been part of my game, having to actually build a one minute set in the actual context of a comedy show turned out to be....pretty freakin stressful! Writing for an audience EXPECTING you to be funny and being constrained to 1 minute was a lot harder than I thought it would be! It ended up being all a blur to me but I'm told it went well ;). Videos will be posted at some point so you can be the judge....and either laugh at me or with me! The Laugh is all that matters! This experience was a good reminder to push yourself. Get out of your comfort zone. Try the hard thing. And while we are all experiencing varying levels of fear about what AI is going to do to our jobs and humanity, I don't believe AI will ever replace human to human experiences like this. Find these and lean into them! We're not going to stop watching humans tell jokes. AI isn't going to replace the emotions of the stress, relief, and subsequent joy that comes from moments like these. AI will never create the community I saw on display last night in Oakland. Work is a Joke will continue on, stay tuned with the website to see if and when it is coming to your city! Or reach out to Jessie and tell her to bring it to you! https://workisajoke.com/Work is a Joke — A Comedy Experience About the Absurdity of WorkWork is a Joke — A Comedy Experience About the Absurdity of Work

Jessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisJessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisAt the Andreessen Horowitz a16z Salon: Best in Community dinner last night, the question of how to measure community and prove its ROI came up, as it pretty much always does when a group of community builders gets together. It’s a fair question and I don’t think it’s going away, but we’ve been talking about it for a long time. The conversations I found more interesting were about how we keep ourselves and our members engaged. The people at the table came from across the spectrum, from startups to much larger companies, and I talked with folks running everything from events built around geocaching to more traditional business dinners as part of their overall events strategy. It was a good reminder of how many different ways there are to build community, and how all of those different kinds of activities play a part in keeping people engaged, interested, and connected. I came away reminded there isn’t one right or wrong way to “do” community, and it was nice to be in a room where that range was so visible. Thank you Audrey Van Zee for inviting me, Han Nguyen for hosting, and to everyone I met over the course of the evening, including Jessica Falkenthal, Adele Bloch, James Deacon, and Haroon (Aaron) Dean!

Jessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisJessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisA week later, I’m still thinking about my experience in Oakland and the people, ideas, and moments that made it so meaningful. Responsive Conference was more than a conference for me. It was a collection of honest conversations, thoughtful introductions, and moments of genuine inclusion. Robin P. Zander You created a space where people could work through ideas together instead of simply sitting through presentations. The care and curation showed in every speaker, performer, and experience. Casey Boyles You are truly one of my favorite people. The introductions, the invitations, and the way you made sure I felt welcome beforehand shaped so much of my experience. Adam Rosendahl I loved Late Nite Art. It reminded me what can happen when people are given room to create together. And yes, we still have a party to co-host. Send me the date! Offsite Was on point, as always. Jake White I love me some you! You have a way of making people feel seen, connected, and taken care of. Jessie Jakes 🖤 Work Is a Joke permitted us to laugh at the complicated, strange, and deeply human parts of work. Craig Forman and CultureC Consulting brought people together around a table where we could move past small talk and build real relationships. Femi Fadugba Your conversation about dystopia and utopia is the one I’ve thought about the most since coming home. And I’m serious about wanting to be in the movie. I left Oakland with new relationships, sharper questions, and an even stronger conviction that the future of work will not be defined only by what technology makes possible. It will also be defined by how we care for the people expected to carry the change. Thank you, Oakland. Thank you, Responsive.

Jessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisJessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisToday marks five years since I left my corporate job and started my own small business! 🎉 I can't believe it's been five years. In true form, whenever something is new and challenging, it feels like it's been 5 minutes and 50 years all at the same time. I have been reflecting on how much I've changed in the last five years, and despite my wicked head cold this week, I wanted to share them in case it helps anyone else feel seen in how they find themselves changing right now too. Five ways I've changed in the last five years: 1. I am starting to love failure. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I *want* to fail when I set out on a new venture. But I am proud of when I fail. Because it means that I'm trying new things, stretching myself, and managing my own expectations around perfection. 2. I'm diversifying my self-worth. When I left my corporate job and started my own business, I struggled at first with recognizing my own definition of success. So I felt untethered most days, without routine or clear direction. Instead of "caring less" about work, I've added in more things to my life that have made me realize I'm way more than my job. And I am honestly better at work because I have more perspective 3. I'm better at asking for help and community. I am a strong, independent person. I feel more capable and confident when I'm the one making space for other people. But I'm getting better at taking it up myself when I actually need it. And I'm so grateful for the people in my career and life who truly see me, my potential, and are willing to offer a hand when I'm still learning how to ask for help. 4. My business is changing. The first five years, I knew how to sell my services because I was experienced and had capability with them. And although I'll always want to be a leadership coach and facilitator, I'm shifting into a new era of business. Where I'm growing a business to support others who can do this work well. I love the growth side of owning a business, and it's time for me to step more into growing my impact through others. More exciting things to come here (including the launch of CO/LEAD). 5. I now love the ambiguity of entrepreneurship. The uncertainty of success still tips me into fear at times. But mostly, it feels like open space to create. To make real solutions that help solve real challenges for leaders and their teams. To change the working world for the better. And that open space taps into my best work. So here's to five years. 🥂 A milestone I didn't realize I needed to celebrate so hard until I wrote this post. I'm also going to write a newsletter later today going more into depth on these five and how you might try on some of them if that's helpful to you. You can follow the newsletter on my LI profile. I'd love to celebrate your growth in the comments too. How are you most proud of how you've changed in the last five years?

Jessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisJessie Jakes 🖤 liked thisWork Is a Joke was so bloody good last week. Jessie Jakes 🖤 is building something so incredibly fun, and so needed at a time when work feels a little tough. It's not about trying to burn down the establishment, it's about being able to laugh at the absurdity of it all. I also loved getting to partner with Craig Forman to help bring this home to Oakland for a night! This couldn't have happened without many, many people. Our sponsors, Offsite, Team Level Partners & Bevy. Austin Drabik, Hank Wethington and Christiane Bayor, MBA, PHR for making everything run so seamlessly on the night. Anthony Lee & Jomal M. for making the sound tip top. And of course Robin P. Zander, for welcoming us so generously into Responsive Conference, and his phenomenal team for capturing all the good media. It was a lot of fun producing this event and I can't wait to do it again. Is Denver ready?? For now, I'll leave you with one of my fave workplace confessions from the night.

“Jessie is one of those rare professionals every organization hopes to find but few ever do. As a Senior Community Engagement Manager, she embodies all the qualities that make for an exceptional customer success leader... genuine care, deep empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the people she supports. Her authenticity and warmth naturally draw others in; customers and community members alike gravitate to her energy. I’ve lost count of how many times at events people would approach our booth just to ask if Jessie was there. Her reputation precedes her because she represents any brand with sincerity, integrity, and heart. Beyond her engaging presence, Jessie’s work ethic and sense of ownership set her apart. She doesn’t just build community, she builds loyalty. Any organization would be lucky to have her representing their brand and nurturing the relationships that define long-term success.”

In a world of endless podcast pitches, how does one stand out? Consider crafting a personalized, 30-second video pitch. It shows effort and personality, immediately differentiating from the generic flood. If budget allows, hiring a booking agent can leverage established relationships for better opportunities. For a DIY approach, tools like Loom, paired with a personalized website link, grab attention effectively. This clever, low-cost strategy builds relationships and increases the chances of being heard amidst the noise. #podcastguest #pitchstrategy #networking #communication #personalbranding #MollyRuland #MichaelDMorrison #SmallBusinessPivotsPodcast

Most small businesses want grants. Far fewer are actually grant‑ready. One of the simplest ways to change that? Build a Grant‑Ready Folder so you’re not starting from scratch every time a new opportunity pops up. And yes—your online presence is part of this. A clear, current website or social profile that shows who you serve, what you do, and some proof of your work makes it easier for reviewers to quickly trust that your business is real and active. Here’s a short video with a checklist you can use to set up your folder. #GrantReady #SmallBusinessGrants #BusinessFunding #SmallBusinessSupport #Entrepreneurship #WomenInBusiness #MinorityOwnedBusiness #MicroBusiness #BusinessResources #GrantWriting

Most companies will spend significantly on venue, AV, and catering for a major event. 🫡 Then hand the mic to whoever seems most comfortable on stage. Here is the thing. Your CEO's most valuable asset in that room is their presence and authority. The moment they are tracking a script and managing slide transitions, that asset is being spent on the wrong thing. The message does not land the way it should. The room does not move. And everyone walks away wondering why the energy felt a little off. That is what professional facilitation solves. Not a flashier event. A more effective one. New post on what is actually at stake when you skip the professional. Many entrepreneurs hit a point where growth outpaces structure — and things start slipping. It’s not a capability issue; it’s a systems issue. If you’re spending more time putting out fires than leading your business, this is your reminder: Your business isn’t broken. It simply needs updated support. I just released a new blog; "Is Your Business a Hot Mess? Here’s How to Fix It and Get Organized" exploring how to shift from reactive chaos to organized clarity. The Local Business Playbook The “Local Business Playbook” inside GoHighLevel is basically a cheat sheet for busy service businesses that want more booked jobs without more chaos. A lot of local businesses already have leads. The real problem is lost conversations and forgotten follow-ups. This playbook focuses on the fundamentals every local business should have in place: 🧭 A simple, clear funnel for new inquiries 📊 A pipeline that shows exactly where each lead is in the process 📱 Automated follow-up via SMS and email so no one slips through the cracks ⭐ Review and reputation systems that run in the background Going through it gave me even more ideas for clients like home services, wellness clinics, and local professionals who are tired of juggling calls, texts, and random notes. If you run a local business and your GoHighLevel feels messy or underused, comment “LOCAL” or DM me. I can help you apply the core pieces from this playbook so your leads stop disappearing and start turning into bookings. #GoHighLevel #HighLevel #GHL #GoHighLevelSpecialist #SystemsVA #AutomationVA #CRMSpecialist #WorkflowDesign #PipelineManagement #FunnelStrategy #SystemCleanup #OnlineBusinessTips
