Mike Vasquez shared thisI really enjoyed sitting down with Justin Levy for the Episode #164 of the 3Degrees Discussions. Justin interned with us at 3Degrees last summer, and it was clear from day one that he was driven to make an impact in additive manufacturing. Since then, he's founded DefendAM, focused on strengthening domestic drone manufacturing and the U.S. defense industrial base. We talked about his journey, the challenges facing American manufacturing, and why building resilient production capability matters now more than ever. It's been great watching Justin turn that vision into action, and I'm excited to see what he and the DefendAM team accomplish next. You can watch the full conversation on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts. https://lnkd.in/gwPCQG2y #AdditiveManufacturing #Defense #Manufacturing #DroneTechnology #Entrepreneurship3Degrees Discussions #164 - Justin Levy - DefendAM3Degrees Discussions #164 - Justin Levy - DefendAM

Mike Vasquez shared thisI've known Jon Walker for years, and it was great to finally have him on the podcast. Today, Jon is helping manufacturers solve complex sourcing and production challenges at Xometry, but our conversations have spanned everything from travel sports to the evolution of additive manufacturing in sporting goods and industrial applications. Jon's career has taken him through companies like Mazak North America, GF Machining Solutions, EOS, and now Xometry, giving him a unique perspective on both traditional manufacturing and the technologies reshaping the industry. In this episode, we discuss the changing manufacturing landscape, where additive manufacturing is delivering real value, how digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 continue to evolve, and what Jon is hearing from manufacturers across a wide range of industries. Thanks again, Jon, for joining me. It was a fun conversation, and I always enjoy catching up. https://lnkd.in/gC6Pcn_2

Mike Vasquez shared thisWe’ve spent years helping organizations navigate the messy reality of additive manufacturing qualification, supplier benchmarking, materials testing, and production scale-up. One thing became really clear: most teams don’t just need software, they need experienced people helping connect the dots across manufacturing, testing, data, and engineering decisions. That’s why we built TRACEAM Insights. TRACEAM Insights is a concierge-style engineering and data support capability built around a trusted ecosystem of manufacturing, testing, and AM experts. We help organizations coordinate builds, manage and structure data, benchmark suppliers and machines, and generate the engineering insight needed to support qualification and production decisions. TRACEAM acts as the connective tissue behind the scenes, helping turn disconnected manufacturing and testing activities into organized, traceable, actionable insight. Excited to start sharing more about what we’ve been building at 3Degrees. https://lnkd.in/dsB3dbqF

Mike Vasquez shared thisAnother great year of AMx (Advanced Manufacturing Experience) in the books. This spring we had 13 high school students from the South Bend area participate in the Advanced Manufacturing Experience program. Over the course of the class, the students had the chance to tour three different advanced manufacturing facilities locally and hear directly from professionals in real production environments. What I always enjoy most about AMx is how quickly the students go from being curious about the technology to confidently building and creating things themselves. This year the class wrapped up with a series of hands on projects where students built and calibrated their own 3D printers, designed and raced 3D printed pinewood derby cars, and even built and flew drones using 3D printed accessories. Programs like this matter because they help students see that advanced manufacturing is not something happening somewhere else. It is happening right here in our community and there are real career paths connected to it. Big thanks to all the companies, guest speakers, mentors, and students who helped make this year such a success. I've got some new ideas brewing for 2027 but if you ever want to talk about workforce development and manufacturing let me know. Mike Vasquez shared thisJust released a new episode of 3Degrees Discussions with David Helmers, owner of Wolfpack Workshop. David brings a practical, hands-on perspective to additive manufacturing, drawing from his work in CNC machining, 3D printing, fabrication, and engineering. We had a great conversation about building a startup in manufacturing, the value of craftsmanship, and why practical problem solving still matters as new technologies continue to evolve. I especially enjoyed hearing David’s perspective on where younger engineers can help shape the future of the industry. If you’re interested in additive manufacturing, engineering, or entrepreneurship, I think you’ll enjoy this one. https://lnkd.in/gq9Jf-jQ3Degrees Discussions #162: David Helmers - Wolfpack Workshop3Degrees Discussions #162: David Helmers - Wolfpack Workshop

Mike Vasquez shared thisJust released a new episode of 3Degrees Discussions with Bryan Sherman, Chief Metallurgist at DSH Technologies LLC. Bryan has spent over 20 years in metal injection molding and sinter-based manufacturing, and we got into a topic that doesn’t get enough attention in additive, debinding and sintering. With all the momentum around binder jetting and other sinter-based AM processes, there’s a lot the industry can learn from the MIM world, especially when it comes to process control, repeatability, and actually scaling production. Good conversation if you’re thinking about how these technologies move beyond prototyping. https://lnkd.in/giXYdQRx3Degrees Discussions #161 - Bryan Sherman - DSH Technologies3Degrees Discussions #161 - Bryan Sherman - DSH Technologies

Mike Vasquez liked thisMike Vasquez liked thisA bit of a change for me. I’ve joined Lightbridge Corporation. Sunnyday Technologies has been around since 2022, but for the last nine months it’s had my full-time attention. I’ve spent the last few weeks looking back at what we managed to build during that stretch — the Open3DCP schema, M3-Crete, CADCLAW, CEMFORGE and quite a few other experiments and benchmarks created along the way. The idea was always pretty simple: find gaps, build useful things, and share them to help the Additive Construction industry move forward. I’m proud of what we got done. Sunnyday isn’t going away, but it will obviously move a lot slower. My focus is now on my new role at Lightbridge. It’s an incredible opportunity — and one I’m ready to put my time and energy into. I’m looking forward to the work ahead. #Lightbridge #NuclearEnergy #SunnydayTechnologies #Engineering

Every factory knows what went wrong but almost none have a system for how to fix it. The experience of senior operators, informal handoffs, and real-time troubleshooting is the engine behind each factory. We’ve had tools to track inventory and schedules for decades, but the frontline knowledge that keeps plants running has stayed scattered. At Myto, we’re building the system of record for how work actually gets done on factory floors. The future of manufacturing software is guiding action on the floor, and we're building it.

"I'm not sure I would trust a robot on the job site or its accuracy." We've all heard the skepticism before but it's becoming clearer and clearer how mature the layout robotics category is becoming with millions of square feet under its belt actually deployed in the field (not just demos). I had the pleasure of seeing Dusty Robotics in person recently and was amazed at its accuracy and registration ability. It wasn't hard to see how robots like this simplify the overall process of laying out projects and enhancing them further with labels and shapes that would be very difficult and time consuming to do manually. Like many of the upgrades in the space, it's not a matter of if but when. Similar to AI, the best in construction are already using and experimenting with them to discover new capabilities and rapidly growing the gap between them and people still sticking to string and chalk lines. Thanks for the overview Tessa Lau and Philipp Herget, great to see in person!

2018: We bought our first HP Multi Jet Fusion printer. My team thought I was crazy investing in “unproven” technology. Today: It’s one of our most profitable capabilities. The bet paid off because we understood something most shops missed MJF wasn’t just better 3D printing. It was a legitimate manufacturing process. What really matters: We became application experts, not just operators. And we can actually design for it. What that looks like in practice: -In-house DFAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) capabilities -UAV components optimized for both strength and weight -Medical prototypes ready for actual testing -Defense parts meeting ITAR specs -Production runs of 50–500 parts in days, not months Most shops can push the print button. We help you figure out if MJF is even the right answer — then redesign your part to take full advantage of what additive can do. Sometimes it’s MJF. Sometimes machining makes more sense. Sometimes it’s a hybrid approach. That’s the difference between having a technology and understanding how to apply it. The secret? We don’t just print and ship. Print → finish → paint → plate → assemble → inspect Same inspection rigor we use for our CNC-machined parts. All backed by ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and ITAR compliance true production-level control from start to finish. Complete control. Production quality. Every time. Now everyone’s talking about MJF’s “breakthrough moment.” We’ve been living it for 6 years. What’s next: More clients are realizing traditional manufacturing isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the “experimental” technology is actually more reliable. If you’re engineering parts where weight, complexity, and speed matter this conversation is worth having. Curious if your application is a fit for MJF? DM me happy to talk through it. #AdditiveManufacturing #DefenseManufacturing #MedicalDevices #AerospaceEngineering #ProductDevelopment

If you raise $100k+ on Kickstarter and your factory’s first reaction is “Congrats, let’s start production” - run. That’s a red flag. A serious factory does not get excited by your viral campaign. They slow you down and push for DFM (design for manufacturability) immediately. Because having demand doesn't mean you can actually make the product, being able to manufacture it does. If your factory doesn't stop you and say: - "This won't work when making thousands" - "This part will cost too much" - "This works for a few samples, not mass production" …they're not looking out for you. They just want to keep their machines running. This is exactly where big teams lose the most money. We've seen massive campaigns fall apart because founders skipped DFM. The product that "worked" in the campaign suddenly can't be made in a real factory. Entire designs get scrapped, profit margins crash. That's the first thing we do with teams. We test if the design can actually be manufactured. Because the fastest way to waste money and trust is to think that getting a lot of interest means your product can actually be made. Making sure your design works for manufacturing isn't optional after you raise money. It's the difference between shipping once and building something that actually lands on your backers' porch. HAPPY NEW YEAR ! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻

If your Kickstarter is growing by $100k every 3 days, you’re 72 hours away from tooling the prototype that impressed everyone - and now your factory tells you they’ll “fix the issues later”… Do this now if you DON‘T want to spend the next month replying to long, disappointed emails from backers, waste thousands before production even starts. Your factory won’t tell you this, but your prototype was likely made to look good once - not to be built thousands of times the same way. It’s not designed for manufacturability. We say this as a manufacturer that also builds, ships, and launches our own products publicly. When you don’t design for scale: - It takes 3× longer to build each unit than expected - Some units are already breaking - It fails basic safety tests - Customers start getting bad products → returns begin - Your profit disappears before you finish shipping So you have 2 choices: - Ship on schedule and hope it holds (it won‘t) - Pause to prevent damage by fixing it Most people choose option 1. That’s how shit goes down. But you‘ll pause. HERE‘S HOW: To make your prototype buildable at scale, freeze the “good” spec, redesign for manufacturability (remove fragile/tolerance-sensitive features), lock in tolerances + process, build a real test ladder (incoming/in-process/end-of-line/reliability), and structure the supply chain so quality holds, yield stays high, and margins survive. This will pass testing and you can still make money. Yes, it delays you. But it saves the product. Because once you start shipping broken units, you’re dangerously close to ruining your reputation and going bankrupt. Ask me how I know. ps: if i just described your situation, message me directly, i have a resource that will save you. 👊🏻
