Andrew Nusca shared this💥Andrew Nusca shared thisFor cybersecurity, AI is likely to be an unprecedented driver of growth as well as an existential challenge. The exigencies of the moment are placing Palo Alto Networks' straight-talking chief executive Nikesh Arora, at the center of a widening reckoning in tech—and are making him a sought-after counselor to the leaders of AI companies and other CEOs. 🔗 Read more in the latest issue of Fortune magazine: https://lnkd.in/dJQcZBuM

Andrew Nusca shared this💡Andrew Nusca shared thisAMD just revealed it will acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion - an extremely rare AI deal between two of the women at the very top of this industry. I can't stop thinking about the photo of AMD CEO Lisa Su and World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li, sitting at a table, smiling and signing deal terms. We’re so used to seeing the AI technocrats together—Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai sitting alongside President Trump at the White House. And here is an image of an alternate pathway. One where women aren’t the outlier at those gatherings (which Su has attended many of), but are designing their own future. Where they’re the ones at the very top, making the decisions, not just in that familiar No. 2 role. In this one photo, we can see a version of the AI industry in which a small group of mostly white male oligarchs aren’t the only ones deciding humanity’s fate. More in my piece for Fortune today.

Andrew Nusca shared this“The issue isn’t whether OpenAI can operate without a chief communications officer. They most certainly can. The issue is whether they are going to face constant controversy, [and] whether recurring reputation challenges lead investors to assign a higher risk premium, and that would be a lower IPO valuation.”Andrew Nusca shared thisOpenAI has not had a chief communications officer (CCO) for nine months, which is pretty remarkable given its year of controversies, IPO planning, and C-suite shakeups. My latest piece takes you inside the recruiting process for the role. After the top candidate turned it down, OpenAI has hired a search firm while other leaders pitch in to guide the team in the meantime. https://lnkd.in/gsABP3xBOpenAI’s search for a chief communications officer hits 9 months after its top candidate turned down the role | FortuneOpenAI’s search for a chief communications officer hits 9 months after its top candidate turned down the role | Fortune

Andrew Nusca shared this✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼Andrew Nusca shared thisSPJ strongly objects to President Donald Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO from the White House because of their coverage. Trump announced the decision today in a Truth Social post, saying the ban was effective immediately. Government officials should not decide which legitimate news organizations deserve access based on whether they approve of their reporting. A free press must be able to question those in power, report critically and serve the public without fear of retaliation. This is about more than three newsrooms. It is about whether government access can be used as leverage over journalism. The public needs journalists who can hold those in power accountable — without fear that access will be taken away for doing their jobs. ➡️ Read the full statement: https://bit.ly/4hfhDsj

Andrew Nusca liked thisAndrew Nusca liked thisGood morning from Detroit, where I am moderating a conversation with several CEOs this afternoon at the Ford Motor Company’s Accelerate summit. The focus is not on the next generation of products, but on what it will take for the next generation of workers to build them. The U.S. will likely have 1.7 million skilled trades job openings every year through 2035, with current training programs producing just 55 workers for every 100 needed. One problem, of course, is that kids are not encouraged to grow up wanting to be HVAC technicians or construction workers. So, along with BlackRock, Google and Carhartt, it formed the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, which has a national report out this morning with Jobs for the Future (JFF) and The Burning Glass Institute. Ford is investing up to $1 billion to address the issue, along with JPMorganChase. More in Fortune CEO Daily. https://lnkd.in/djQ-FRqiThe U.S. needs 1.7 million skilled trades workers a year. Andrew Nusca reacted on thisAndrew Nusca reacted on thisMy kindergartener has developed a strong preference for commuting to school in white go-go boots with heels. She often pairs them with a Strawberry Shortcake nightgown, or the strawberry shirt with black and pink shorts. (see below) This exasperates me for two reasons. First, go-go boots? Really, do I even have to explain this? Second, no New York woman should have to commute 12 blocks in heels. Since school began, I've argued with her every morning. Put on sneakers. You’ll be cold. Your feet will hurt. Those are not walking shoes. She wins. She always wins. She has the particular rage born of the conviction that, right or wrong, she is in charge of her own life. I identify with this rage because, SAME. But still, I'm technically in charge of guiding the circumstances of said life. So this morning, when I saw the go-go boots, I suggested socks. ("NO!") And then I said: “GOOD CHOICE." Then I mentioned that we’d be walking the 12 blocks to school instead of taking the B38 like we normally do. Cool! I tucked her sneakers into her backpack. About four blocks in, she looked up at me. “Did you bring my sneakers?” I had. The go-go boots are currently sitting on my desk. When my manager, Courtney Chapman Coupe, passed by, I felt the need to explain this saga. She laughed and said this is actually a pretty smart management strategy. In a phrase: "You’ll figure it out." Give people enough room to experience the consequences of their own choices. Stay close enough to help when they ask. It really does seem to get better results. (And to the person who saw fit to give my daughter go-go boots, you know who you are, thanks.)

We uncovered a staffing pattern at a major studio that helps explain recurring overtime disputes: aggregated payroll filings show temporary hires reclassified as freelancers across three recent productions, reducing benefits while keeping core schedules intact. Our reporting pairs those filings with on-the-record comments from a production coordinator and redacted timecards—sources we can verify and reproduce. This is the kind of accountability the Black press brings: deep access, meticulous sourcing, and scrutiny where others look away.
