Oscar H. Castro shared thisI just wrapped up a consulting engagement at Mattel, where I had the privilege of working with the DTC team to build up the Mattel Creations and American Girl ecommerce businesses. Since early 2024, I've collaborated with an incredibly talented group on key initiatives like DTC strategy, multi-location fulfillment, international expansion/localization, and consumer loyalty. As an added bonus, I got to work with some amazing brands (Barbie, American Girl) and my childhood faves (He-Man, Hot Wheels). I'm grateful for the experience, the connections, and the opportunity to contribute to such exciting projects. Wishing the team continued success, I'll be cheering you on! As I explore what's next, I'm open to new opportunities in digital transformation, ecommerce and business strategy. Let's connect if you need help.

It will be interesting to see how this fares against players like Global-e and Shopify's Managed Markets solution (formerly Markets Pro). I'm surprised that UPS didn't do this years ago, although the timing for this is interesting given the tariff environment. Oscar H. Castro liked thisOscar H. Castro liked thisRecently, we received a comment on Instagram that caught our attention: “I was today years old when I learned what ECPI stands for.” It made us realize something. As we celebrate 60 years, it's worth revisiting where we started. ECPI began in 1966 as the Electronic Computer Programming Institute, founded in Norfolk, Virginia with a clear purpose of closing the gap between industry needs and available talent through hands-on, career-focused education. Over the decades, that mission expanded with new programs, new campuses, online learning, graduate degrees, industry partnerships, and accreditation milestones. What started as a single institute grew into a national university. That growth reflects one consistent focus. To prepare students for real opportunities in a changing workforce. Sixty years in, the name carries history, and the mission continues forward. See more on our history page: https://lnkd.in/e2-SCjn6

Oscar H. Castro reacted on thisOscar H. Castro reacted on thisBottoms up 🥃 One of the hardest parts about being a CMO? Aligning on metrics. Like ROAS. Save this POV from Preston 🩳 Rutherford (Follow him) "CFO: What’s a good ROAS target for 2025? CMO: The lower, the better. CFO: That doesn’t make sense. Why would we aim for lower ROAS? Isn’t that the opposite of what we’re trying to do? CMO: Not at all. ROAS obsession is where so many brands get it wrong. By focusing on short-term returns, they build a growth model that depends entirely on spending money to acquire customers. And that’s not sustainable. CFO: But don’t we need to acquire customers? Isn’t that the goal? CMO: Yes, but the goal shouldn’t be to constantly buy customers through paid ads. The real objective is to build a brand so powerful and resonant that people come directly to us when they’re ready to buy. No ads, no promotions—just a deep emotional connection to our brand that puts us top of mind. CFO: That sounds great in theory, but doesn’t building that connection mean spending more with lower returns? CMO: It does in the short term. Here’s the deal: at any given time, only about 5% of your audience is actively shopping for what we sell. For that 5%, ads focused on product, price, and promotion perform well. But for the other 95%? Those ads don’t resonate because they’re not in-market. That’s where branding comes in. CFO: And branding means advertising to the 95% who aren’t ready to buy? CMO: Exactly. The downside is that this effort will show lower ROAS because it’s not driving immediate conversions. But here’s the fantastic news—reaching that 95% is astronomically cheaper because they aren’t being bid on by every competitor in the category. CFO: So what’s the benefit of reaching them when they’re not shopping? CMO: When they’re not in-market, they’re less focused on rational factors like price and features. That’s the perfect time to build an emotional connection. If you connect with them then, by the time they’re in the 5%, they already know, trust, and want your brand. They don’t even shop around. CFO: You’re saying this makes us harder to compete with? CMO: Exactly. Competitors can match our price, promotions, and even features. But they can’t replicate our brand. A strong brand creates a value proposition that draws customers directly to us, bypassing the whole ad ecosystem entirely. CFO: So what’s the long-term play here? CMO: By focusing on branding and building this connection with the 95%, we’re creating future-proof growth. It’s not about immediate ROAS—it’s about turning our audience into loyal customers who seek us out on their own. That’s how we reduce dependency on paid acquisition and build a scalable, profitable business. P.S. Make sure you give Preston a follow btw! -- 👋 P.P.S. Oscar H. Castro liked thisOscar H. Castro liked thisToday, I’m taking a moment to reflect on my Birthday. This past season has been one of the more challenging ones in my career. Like many, I’ve been navigating a transition while also showing up for my family in ways that mattered deeply. What it’s reinforced for me is this: resilience isn’t loud. It’s built in the quiet moments and continuing to move forward, staying grounded, and trusting that the right opportunity is ahead. I’m incredibly grateful for the support system around me, especially my husband, who consistently shows up with encouragement (and birthday brownies and roses 🌹). As I continue my search, I’m focused on opportunities where I can bring my experience in product strategy, program delivery, and cross-functional leadership to teams building meaningful, scalable solutions. If you’re working on something impactful or know of teams looking for a product leader, I’d love to connect. Onward.

At the Technology Association of Georgia Georgia Technology Summit this morning, Daryl Plummer dropped a gem: “Time saved ≠ value created.” AI isn’t just about productivity… it’s about scale. It’s about discovering new value, not just doing the same work faster. Start with where you extend: market reach, new revenue streams, opportunity creation. Treat productivity as a side effect, not the main event. #GeorgiaTechSummit #AI #BusinessGrowth #ScaleOverSpeed

There’s been a lot of noise about AI in franchising lately, and for good reason. At this year’s Franchise Leadership & Development Conference (FLDC) in Atlanta, I had the opportunity to join Samantha Tacca, Michael Ackley, and Loren Eckart to discuss how AI and technology are reshaping franchise lead generation. What became clear is that the real power of AI isn’t just in automation. It’s in personalization. At Batteries Plus, we’ve used AI to make our development process smarter and more efficient, shortening our lead-to-close time to around 10 weeks. We’re also using it to create short, personalized videos that greet prospective franchisees by name, a human touch powered by technology. I shared during the panel that there’s a key distinction between reactive and proactive AI. Reactive AI helps us manage tasks and respond faster, while proactive AI predicts buyer behavior and allows us to deliver a more tailored experience. That’s where the real potential lies. Yes, AI can be costly and complex, but the reality is that you can’t afford not to use it. As more tools emerge, the barrier to entry will fall and the opportunities for creativity will grow. In this episode of The Higher Ed Marketer Podcast, Troy and I talk with Kesha Boyce Williams of University of South Carolina Upstate about why this work is different. Higher ed marketing is complex. It combines B2B and B2C, multiple audiences, long recruitment cycles, and high expectations. That is why schools need partners who understand the unique challenges of higher ed, not just agencies that build websites for anyone. 🎧 Excited to share this conversation about the strategy, patience, and expertise it takes to get a redesign right. Ulta’s shopper isn’t calculating price per ml. They are reacting to the number on the shelf tag. We pulled pricing data across Ulta.com and found the same pattern everywhere. From top search terms to sponsored placements to bestsellers across skincare, makeup, and hair, most winning products sit between 20 and 40 dollars. That $20 to $40 window is where growth is happening without discounts. It is where products convert and where the shopper says yes, even when the price per ml is higher. A $26 mini outselling a $52 full size isn’t a fluke. It is strategy. If you are launching at Ulta or trying to scale, absolute price matters more than you think.

LOSING LOYALTY So this article from WSJ’s MarketWatch suggests that retail loyalty programs are ‘ground zero’ for surveillance pricing. That merchants are using programs to gather data, profile your behavior, and work to maximize the price you pay for products. This follows recent articles that Instacart has run pricing experiments designed to understand the individual shopper’s price sensitivity - with a goal of maximizing revenue. As a lifelong retailer I can understand the thought-process involved: If we understand each shopper’s buying behavior we can work to maximize the revenue realized from each shopper. While in theory this may be true, in real life it cannot be more wrong. Retailers - or companies like Instacart - thinking like this treat shoppers as commodities, one interchangeable for another. But true practitioners of loyalty - of whom there are too few - understand that loyalty has always been about an understanding of human behavior, not just economics. I will always remember the famous Norman Mayne, President of Dorothy Lane Markets, saying that loyalty programs are not about making shoppers more loyal to the retailer. Indeed, they are about the opposite: A way for retailers to be more loyal to their shoppers. As one of the earliest loyalty practitioners, and creator of the first true marketing personalization solution for retail over twenty years ago, I am a staunch defender of Norman’s philosophy. The use of differentiated - customer specific - pricing to simply increase margin is not the way to become more loyal to your shoppers. I am proud of the growing number of retailers using Birdzi’s platform, specifically its Visper solution, to provide true, incremental, savings to shoppers. These retailers have taken on the responsibility of funding savings on products each shopper wants to buy - not just offering deals on what vendors want to promote. By adopting a TRUE CUSTOMER FIRST philosophy, these retailers are earning increased loyalty from their shoppers. And the results they are seeing prove that out. Retailers looking to simply harvest data from their loyalty programs to directly increase margins or sales through differentiated pricing will find the initiative will come back to bite them. Shoppers are not stupid. They will understand the value proposition - or lack thereof - and make their own decision to participate or not. So who are you loyal to? #retail #grocery #supermarkets #CPG #FMCG Birdzi, Inc.
