My dad was in the business so I got my life and health license when I was 18 and worked with him through college. Since I was born, everything I have enjoyed and experienced was made possible because some insurance broker found a customer with a need and found a solution for them. For over 40 years, I have had the privilege to work with 1000’s of incredible people. Starting with a brief stint at Northwestern Mutual, then the evolution of Central Life to Employers Health to Humana, and finally with BenefitMall/ CRC Benefits, working with brokers to solve the employee benefits needs of employers has been incredibly rewarding. What we do is truly a noble cause; making sure people have the coverage they need when they need it. I love who we are as an industry and I love what we do. I have so many wonderful people to thank and I am humbled by the people who I have worked for, worked with and befriended over the years. It wasn’t perfect but in the end, I am so incredibly blessed by all who I have served, led and learned from. Thank you to the incredible leaders who guided me along the way, the coworkers who jointly served our customers so well, and the broker partners who made my work come to fruition by solving customer needs. You all know who you are. Am I retired? For the next few months the answer is yes! After that, we shall see. Retirement is so hard to define. I love this industry so if I can help people in new and different ways, that kind of sounds exciting but we shall see. Lastly, to my family. I think it is more like we retired! To my incredible wife Monica, the best sales trip hostess there is, to my daughters Taylor (Clay), Madison (Jessica) and Lily Mae, thank you for the support, patience and love that kept me going. Simply the best. If I had a few final thoughts for now, they would be; keep family first, culture truly matters, do what you say you are going to do, love all people, grit conquers any challenge, be curious and not judgemental, do what you love and treasure every day. All my best to all I have been blessed to know, take care, jtw

At Delta Dental, every smile we protect and share strengthens our purpose, our partnerships, and the communities we serve. Our mission is clear: improve oral and overall health with no one left behind. In a world, where standing still means falling behind, we work every day to expand access, remove cost as a barrier, and ensure that race is not a determinant of care. We are equally committed to advancing the dental health profession, a critical step in bringing care to historically underserved and underrepresented communities. Peter Morris liked thisPeter Morris liked thisA love letter to San Francisco. This weekend I celebrated my 25th year of living in San Francisco. Through the booms and busts, I have always loved this city and I’m immensely grateful to call it home. San Francisco is a creative, alive and always changing place. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and celebrates arts, cultures and people in countless ways. I'm proud of how we take care of each other and value our differences. I moved here in 2000, at the height of the dot com boom. At that time, I was working for Hewitt Associates on a dot com spinoff named Sageo. I figured I would come here for a couple of years and then move back to New York or London or somewhere else altogether. When the dot com bubble burst, many of my friends lost their jobs and moved away. I was able to transfer back to the communications practice and felt lucky to stay in this gorgeous city that was starting to feel like home. My cousin asked me this weekend if I remembered when I decided that I would stay long-term. And I think that was one of the first times I felt like I was supposed to be here. Fast forward to 2006, a perfect new job fell through and was lucky to have a former colleague offer me a project. With the encouragement of my friends, I walked into City Hall to get a business license to start consulting on my own. I had a whole community of entrepreneurial women cheering me on—and spending considerable time helping me figure out those first steps. I often think about how much those role models and early support meant. The strong Bay Area economy helped propel our business and so many others. We hired a team and leased offices here in SF. It was crazy hard work but I can’t imagine doing it in any other place. Along the way, I got to know the city through organizations like Taproot Foundation, SF-Marin Food Bank, La Cocina - Nonprofit Kitchen Incubator and our office neighbor Hamilton Families. I felt deeply connected to this community and the desire to be part of making it better. I’ve made lifelong friends who are now family—including one I met on a bus, another who I met on a plane, one I met at the farmer’s market and another in the most-SF way: on Craigslist. I met my husband here (online of course!) and we got married on picturesque China Beach with the Golden Gate Bridge in the backdrop. So this weekend was a chance to celebrate and appreciate all I love about San Francisco and all it has given me. We walked 25,000 steps, starting on my favorite Lands End trail, had delicious Mexican food at El Buen Comer, a fabulous dinner at Zuni, stopped by some favorite bars and stayed out late at a drag show. And told lots of stories with friends and family about why we are all so so thankful to call San Francisco home.

Peter Morris liked thisPeter Morris liked this📣 I don’t post often, but I wanted to share some news and reflections. God created me with a unique identity — a connector. Over the years, I’ve discovered how much joy and purpose I find in connecting people to each other for greater synergies, connecting solutions to affiliates and customers, and connecting knowledge that I have read or heard to those also eager to learn and grow. For the past 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of living out that identity in the insurance industry with VelaPoint, Quotit, National General, LeadCloud, AHCP, and Allstate Health. Along the way, I’ve carried many business cards and email addresses, but one constant has been the leadership and vision of Aaron Goddard. Thank you, AG, for being one of the smartest leaders I’ve ever worked with and for the opportunities to grow under your leadership. I have grown so much just trying to keep up with you. I also want to express gratitude to so many other leaders I’ve learned from and worked alongside — Erika Sullivan, Steve Trattner, Chad Hogan, Charlie Harris, Ean Vickrey, Jessie Hillman, and many more. Reorganizations and restructures are part of bringing great companies and people together, and this time my chapter with this incredible crew comes to an end. Allstate is positioned to be better than ever and continue to be the leader in delivering the products and enrollment solutions to the market. While closing this chapter is bittersweet, I’m excited to see what God is inviting me into next. The insurance industry continues to evolve with new technologies, solutions, and products — and I look forward to seeing where those connections lead. Here’s to the next season of learning, connecting, and building what’s ahead.

Peter Morris liked thisPeter Morris liked thisLast week, I had the privilege of being a guest speaker at the NBMBAA Leadership Institute. It was an amazing opportunity to reflect on my personal leadership journey, and what it means to lead through the silent expectations of stereotypes and succeed in systems not built with me in mind. I discussed strategies that transform those systems into repeatable, scalable processes that build winning teams. A true leader speaks when it’s uncomfortable and advocates when it’s inconvenient. Most importantly, I shared what it means to be the only one at the table and using that seat to pull up more chairs. The courage to be authentic is my super power.

Whenever I see it, I’m transported back to my early days at the prestigious consulting firm. It was a signal, a quiet badge worn proudly by those who knew. It represented excellence. When you transitioned into a consulting role at Hewitt, you were issued one of these bags. We called them Teddy Bags; named after our founder, Ted Hewitt. Walking through an airport and spotting another Teddy Bag brought immediate comfort. You knew that person had been trained the right way. You knew they were a skilled consultant. You knew excellence was on its way. In the early years of my career, I looked forward to meetings where someone carried that bag into the client’s conference room. I’d study how they worked, how they spoke, and how they managed a client. I grew because of it. I was TUNED IN to their Frequency of Excellence. That bag truly was a mark of excellence, and I’m grateful for the standard it set. However, one thing’s for sure: that bag never once touched the surface of a client’s table. Ever. Three incredible days at #JPM2026. Same conversation with 10+ health system execs: "We're building our AI strategy. Evaluating vendors. Need to pick the right partners." This sounds familiar. 2009-2012: The EHR decision. After the HITECH Act, health systems spent 18-24 months evaluating Epic vs. Cerner. Consultants. Committees. RFPs. Multi-year implementations. The logic made sense: EHRs were monolithic platforms with huge switching costs. You had to get it right. 2025: The AI decision. I'm watching health systems do the same thing. "AI steering committees." "Strategic AI partner" RFPs. Trying to pick winners. But there's a critical difference: EHRs were a single, massive platform decision. AI in healthcare is dozens of different problems that need dozens of different solutions. Here's what health systems are missing: They're looking for "the AI vendor" when they should be building "an AI portfolio." There's no single AI platform that solves: → Documentation burden (ambient notes) → Radiology throughput (workflow optimization) → Clinical trials matching → Revenue cycle optimization (across specialties) → Clinical decision support These are different problems. Different technologies. Different vendors. Different timelines. Some need FDA clearance and 24-month validations. Some can pilot in 90 days. Some integrate with Epic. Some replace parts of Epic. You can't solve all of these with one "strategic AI partnership”....no matter that Anthropic is saying right now. <ducks> The AI landscape is evolving too fast for monogamous vendor relationships. 6 months ago: GPT-4 for clinical documentation. Today: Ambient listening, agentic workflows, multimodal imaging analysis. 6 months from now: Something else entirely. That's why you need exposure across the whole landscape—not a bet on one vendor. The mistake I see health systems making: Approach 1: "Strategic Partner" Strategy Pick one AI vendor → Enterprise deal → 3-year commitment → Hope they solve everything Result: You're locked in. Technology moves on. You're stuck in vendor negotiations while competitors move faster. Approach 2: "Portfolio Strategy" Deploy capital across multiple companies → Take equity → Co-develop solutions → Maintain optionality Result: You capture upside. You shape products. You're first to new capabilities. You have relationships across the ecosystem. After 20 years building innovation platforms at JPMorgan, Mousse Partners, Blueprint Health, Junto Health, Atlantic Health: In fast-moving markets, portfolio strategies beat single-vendor bets. Healthcare AI is moving fast. The question isn't "Which AI vendor should we pick?" The question is: "How do we build an AI portfolio that gives us the most optionality" If you're thinking about this, let's talk. 📩 douglas.m.hayes@gmail.com ☎️ 215-620-2032 #healthcareAI #digitalhealth #venturecapital #innovation

Institutions don’t fail all at once. They fail when design can’t keep up with change. In Davos this week, I’ll be joining the inaugural gathering of the Institutional Research Network, a new initiative convened by The Digital Economist. The focus is not another set of conversations but the patient work of connecting research, markets, and governance so ideas can take institutional form and hold under real-world pressure. Some initiatives are about visibility. This one is about durability. #Davos2026 #InstitutionalDesign #IRN #TheDigitalEconomist

Federal leaders at HHS and CMS are explicitly pro healthcare AI. And if you don't know, now you know. In the past 3 months they have already implemented pro AI policies across multiple agencies: ARPA-H's ADVOCATE program, FDA's TEMPO, and CMS's ACCESS model - brought to you by Innovation Center Director Abe Sutton who is speaking with me here. And I never thought the AMA would be issuing statements in support of health AI, but somehow this is the world we are living in. The truth is, clinical AI is a win for virtually every stakeholder in the healthcare system if we get policy right. Who still needs to be convinced? Plenty of people on the margins of our industry. But I'll call attention in particular to the American public where there are still significant fears about job loss, privacy, etc. Waymo is probably >30% market share in SF and it got there in ~18 months by putting an excellent product in people's hands. We'll win the public by getting them something of tangible value that clearly makes their lives better.

FORCING CHANGE IN SITE OF CARE McKinsey & Company's recent paper on the forces pressuring healthcare, including the possibility of margin compression of up to 13 percentage points for health systems, does a good job of putting numbers around what most operators already feel. Two of the biggest drivers they mention are policy shifts in reimbursement and rising utilization driven by an aging population. The cohort of 70+ year old Americans will grow the fastest over the next 5 years, and it is well established that older patients have more complex needs, more chronic disease, and more touchpoints within the healthcare system. Layer that on top of continued clinical workforce shortages, and the supply-demand gap widens further. From my perspective, optimizing for site of care is the most important lever we have to address this challenge. We can’t quickly reduce how much care older patients need, but we can change where and how services are delivered. Supporting aging patients in lower-cost settings like the home, ambulatory sites, and virtual environments is no longer just a preference or convenience, it’s a necessity. This is where the conversation around site-neutral payments becomes so relevant. CMS is moving quickly in this direction, and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs) are squarely in the crosshairs. The shift will undoubtedly clamp down further on hospital margins, but it shouldn’t be surprising. We’ve been talking about the demise of HOPD reimbursement for years, and the health systems that will fare best are the ones who are working towards aligning their approach with where patients can be treated safely, efficiently, and at lower cost, rather than relying on legacy reimbursement structures to fill the gap. And just like it doesn’t make sense to try to replicate a hospital or nursing home environment in a patient’s home, we also shouldn’t try to carry the same clinical staffing model into every care setting. Yes, there are non-negotiables when it comes to patient safety and clinical expertise, but there’s also a meaningful opportunity to rethink how teams are built. That means clinicians at every level working at the top of their licenses, thoughtfully involving family members and community resources, and using technology to surround these sites of care with non-clinical operational support. From my health system days, I understand why rising costs, margin pressure, and site-neutral payments feel like threats. While painful, I’m hopeful they can also serve as a positive forcing function, pushing us toward care models that are better aligned with our aging population and the realities of today’s workforce.

I’m excited to share that Angle Health, founded by former Palantir Technologies execs Tylon (Ty) W. and Anirban Gangopadhyay, has announced an oversubscribed Series B bringing total funding to nearly $200M. I’m proud to be an early investor and to have led this competitive round with the amazing team at Portage. Why we keep leaning in: - 26x revenue growth since the Series A - Serving 3,000+ employers across 44 states - 80%+ renewal rates Angle Health is rebuilding the healthcare benefits infrastructure for SMBs, who employ nearly half of America’s workforce but have historically been shut out of enterprise-grade coverage. Their AI-native platform helps predict risk and deliver better care at a sustainable cost. This is exactly the kind of product-driven, AI-native company we’re proud to support at Mighty Capital.
