Do they contribute, or do they act as a drain on society? While not central to this paper, it should also be noted that legal and illegal immigrants are far less likely to be involved with criminal activities. Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor was on a rooftop with two fellow SEALs and Iraqi Army soldiers, providing sniper overwatch during a clearance operation in one of the most hostile sectors of the city, when an insurgent threw a grenade onto the roof, and it hit Monsoor in the chest. He instantly dropped on top of the grenade with complete disregard for his own well-being and absorbed the blast with his own body. Both of his teammates survived, and Monsoor died from his wounds a short time later. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2008, and in 2019 the Navy commissioned the USS Michael Monsoor, a Zumwalt-class destroyer that still carries his name to sea today. May we never forget Michael and countless others like him who gave everything in service to our country and to protect their teammates.

The tradition dates back to World War I, when families hung blue star banners in their windows for every loved one serving overseas. If that loved one made the ultimate sacrifice, families replaced the blue star with gold. Today, that gold star still marks the same thing it did over a century ago: a family who gave everything this country asked of them.
