Go Dukes!Russell P Reeder shared thisThis past Friday, we ran the first AI orientation for the JMU College of Business. It started as an idea from Russell P Reeder. The goal was not to get students excited about AI. Most of them already are. It was to make them harder to fool. Eleven student leaders ran the room. They came from JMU AIS, the Madison Consulting Club, and the Madison Artificial Intelligence Club. They opened the session, then worked table to table while pairs dug into business scenarios where the AI came back polished, organized, confident, and wrong in places. Nobody told students what was wrong. The leaders pushed them to find it, to say why it was wrong, and then to answer the harder one: what happens if nobody catches it? 52 students gave us feedback afterward. Before the session, most said they checked AI output only sometimes. Afterward, 98% said they usually or always expect to check it before they use it. That is stated intent, not measured behavior, but the shift was consistent across the room. Nearly 90% described catching a numbers problem: a budget that did not add up, a break-even built on the wrong total. The arithmetic was the way in. The next session is getting them to question the assumptions underneath the numbers. One student wrote: "Think for yourself, don't let AI think for you." That is the whole thing. AI literacy is not only knowing what these tools can do. It is knowing when to question them. Russell P Reeder shared thisKC and I dressed up Friday night for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts Ball with our friends; Jermaine Johnson and Rae Ann S. Johnson, Sumeet Shrivastava, Jeff Grass, Julian Setian, Jennifer Taylor and their wonderful spouses. Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a New Orleans menu, and the Filene Center under the stars. Hard to beat. Here's the part that stuck with me, and it came from Arvind Manocha, President and CEO of Wolf Trap Foundation, who gave a keynote worth the price of admission. Most people know Wolf Trap as the place you see a concert in the summer. What they don't know is that Wolf Trap's Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts reaches nearly 100,000 children, educators, and families a year, and it has the data to prove it works. In a randomized trial with Fairfax County Public Schools, Wolf Trap sent actors, musicians, puppeteers, and dancers into pre-K and kindergarten classrooms to teach math through the arts. Pattern recognition through movement. Sequencing through song. The kids gained the equivalent of 34 extra days of math learning in a year. Right now in Virginia, that program is in 766 classrooms across 52 school divisions. 88 percent of them are Title I or Head Start. Thirteen thousand children this year, most of whom would never have had a teaching artist walk into their classroom otherwise. That's the same problem we work on from the other side. As Vice Chair of the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation, we're building a 70,000 sq ft science center in Dulles where kids can put their hands on how the world works. Wolf Trap does it with a stage and a song. Put the two together and you get STEAM. Most kids don't grow up with an engineer or a musician at the dinner table. The kid who becomes one is usually the kid who got exposed early, by someone who made the effort. One residency. One field trip. One adult who said, you could do this. That's the whole job. Not picking which kids are talented. Making sure every kid gets close enough to find out. The arts teach you to see. Science teaches you to test what you see. A child who gets both grows up able to imagine something and then build it. That's the person every company I've ever run was trying to hire. Grateful for friends who spend their evenings, and their checkbooks, making sure more kids get that chance. Who was the adult who put something in front of you early and changed where you ended up? Russell P Reeder shared thisSpent Wednesday morning at the The Washington Post's Building America event watching George Mason University launch the Virginia Quantum Hub. Great to catch up with President Gregory Washington and Rector Sumeet Shrivastava, and to hear Patrick Vora lay out what Mason is actually putting on the ground. Every CEO I talk to files quantum under "five years out." Meanwhile the people building it were on stage saying the workforce gap is already here: one qualified quantum worker for every three open jobs, and a projected shortfall of 850,000 people by 2036. What Mason is doing about it looks exactly like how I tell companies to build anything. They invested first and proved it worked. A decade of deliberate investment, 24 faculty across seven departments, and Virginia's first interdisciplinary master's in quantum science and engineering. Then Virginia showed up with a $3.7 million GO Virginia grant. Dr. Washington called it launching from strength, not from scratch. That's the order. Prove it, then scale it. They refused to pick a winner too early. The hub's quantum computer is open architecture. Not locked to one type of qubit. Swap processors, test control hardware, upgrade as the technology moves. Nobody knows which approach wins yet, so they built for optionality instead of betting the building on a guess. They're training at every level, not just PhDs. K12 teachers. An associate's program with Northern Virginia Community College that turns data center technicians into quantum technicians. A hardware concentration in the master's. And a track for executives, because the people who will make the buying decisions need to understand what they're buying. Celia Merzbacher of the Quantum Economic Development Consortium said most quantum job postings don't even have "quantum" in the title. They say laser engineer, vacuum technician, software engineer. Brian Stone of the National Science Foundation (NSF) went further: it takes pipefitters and welders to run these machines, the same way it takes 3,000 people to support a few hundred researchers in Antarctica. The skills exist. The gap is leaders who can connect them. Quantum will arrive in your company the way AI did. Quietly, then all at once. The leaders who understood it before they had to will be the ones making the calls. Proud to see a Virginia public university out in front. Russell P Reeder shared thisEmployee burnout is real! But most of the people I talk to aren't burnt out from working too hard. They're burnt out from working hard on ten things and closing none of them. This is a management problem, not an employee problem! Exhaustion plus no visible progress isn't a stamina problem. It's a focus problem. If that's you right now, you aren't failing. You've been handed a list nobody prioritized. I'm watching this accelerate. Everything got easier to start. Nothing got easier to finish. I wrote about this for Forbes last year and called it the busy desire, the drive to do something that crowds out the thing that matters. It's more true now than when I wrote it. The core of it: If you have ten priorities, you have none. Name three to five outcomes for the next 90 days and say no out loud to everything else. Protect two blocks of real thinking time a day. Defend them like board meetings. If the calendar doesn't defend the work, nothing will. Prioritize with data, not with whoever asked last or loudest. Cut structural drag every quarter. That approval loop nobody remembers creating is costing someone their Thursday. Measure outcomes, not activity. Hours logged and tickets closed prove people are busy. They prove nothing moved. Here's the part people don't expect. Doing less doesn't feel like slowing down. It feels like relief. People stop apologizing for what they didn't get to and start finishing things. Energy comes back, because finishing is where energy comes from. If you lead a team, this one is yours. Count what they're carrying, then cut it. If you don't lead a team, you still have a move. Take your list to your manager and ask one question. If I can only close three of these in the next 90 days, which three? Most managers have never been asked that. Most will thank you for it. Clarity outperforms capacity. Every time. Russell P Reeder shared thisEleven years ago Jonathan Alger called and asked me to chair the advisory board of a center that didn't exist yet. No staff. No building. Just a vision: "The National Model for the Engaged University." Today we dedicated Alger Hall at James Madison University. The James Madison Center for Civic Engagement opened in 2017. Now JMU students sit down for 90 minutes in a small group, deliberately built to include people who disagree with them, and practice the conversation. Not debate. Deliberation. They'll sit next to people who vote differently than they do. They'll have teammates, professors, and someday a boss who sees this country differently. That's not a defect. That's the design. Last October, $2.1 million from the Department of Education. In January, another $2.72 million to take the model to other campuses. One of 16 institutions chosen nationwide, and the only one in Virginia. Nearly $5 million, the largest competitively awarded grants in JMU's history. 42 students now live upstairs from the Center. Jon isn't president here anymore. He left. And the Madison Center for Civic Engagement kept growing. That's the real test of a leader. Not what you build while you're in the chair. What's still standing after you get out of it. Heroes don't scale. Systems do. And the board didn't do this work. David Kirkpatrick led it. Kara Dillard leads it now. Russell P Reeder shared thisAnother week, another college drop-off. We left Los Angeles 11 years ago, and now we’re back to drop off Hannah. We’re so grateful to have amazing friends here who will be there for her while we’re on the other coast. KC Reeder and I are so proud of Hannah, but what a mixed bag of emotions. I’m excited that she changed her major to Toy Design, with an illustration minor, and now going to Otis College of Art and Design. At the same time, it’s hard having her so far away and knowing we can’t see her whenever we want. What an amazing time in our journey as parents. We get to watch our children grow up with confidence and discover their dreams. Happy to have helped provide them the “roots and wings” to go out and chase those dreams. The sky is the limit, and I know our children will do amazing things and make this world a better place! Onward and Upward!

We opened our first restaurant in Minnesota, our 30th state, and celebrated 500 restaurants overall. A number we couldn't have imagined 17 years ago, when we first talked about creating a fast, affordable format for our Mediterranean cuisine served at the CAVA Mezze full-service restaurant. I was able to mark the moment at our new University of Minnesota location in Minneapolis with my co-founders, Ted Xenohristos, Ike Grigoropoulos, Chef Dimitri Moshovitis, and around two thousand of our welcoming new neighbors. Five hundred is a big milestone, but what matters most to me is what’s behind it: 500 restaurant teams, numbering over 15,000 team members, in 500 communities, welcoming people in with generous hospitality and making food they’re excited to eat. That’s a lot of people, a lot of feta, and more than a few very early mornings. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who helped us get here, from the team opening our doors in Minneapolis to our support center and production facilities teams, to every CAVA team member who has helped build this company over the years. Some who remain with us, and some who have moved on to new endeavors...you will always be part of our journey. And to our guests: thank you for continuing to invite us into your communities. This week I had the pleasure of having an on-campus engagement with the JMU College of Science and Mathematics Executive Advisory Council. We spent the day learning about the priorities and goals of CSM. We brainstormed ideas on how we can best serve the College and University in reaching those goals and achieving their vision. I’m especially honored to be able to represent the interests of Geology and Earth Science. In one, embodiment, the present invention utilizes a rights owner application, a central repository database, a rights licensing application, and a rights exchange application, to integrate the management, tracking, and licensing of intellectual property. The invention allows intellectual property owners and consumers or licensees to conduct real-time licensing transactions over a network, such as the Internet, an intranet, and the like. The rights owner application captures descriptive information about the intellectual property, the rights owned, the rights that have been licensed out, pricing rules, workflow rules, invoice/payment processing rules and schedules, royalty (participation, residuals, etc.) rules and schedules, license request forms, license quotes, license agreements, relationships between parties involved in agreement, contact information and user profiles, application security, data access rules, reporting, ad-hoc querying, information analysis, automated notification alerts and the like.
