Ryan Mason reposted thisRyan Mason reposted thisAs we head into Expo Target just dropped Q4 earnings and if you are an emerging CPG brand, you need to pay attention. $2B+ in incremental store investment. $1B of that going directly to Food & Beverage. Store reflows. Remodels. Expanded shelf space. F&B has averaged 8% annual growth at Target since 2019 and they are doubling down. Here's the signal that matters most: Target's CMO Cara Sylvester said explicitly they are NOT trying to be an everyday grocer. Instead, they are leaning into emerging brands, wellness, NA beverages, trend forward food, and removing synthetic colors from cereals. Eric Barajas 👀 Read that again. A top-5 US retailer is building its food identity around the exact categories where natural and emerging brands live. 👊 For emerging brands, Target is actively creating space for innovation, newness, and differentiation. The capital is committed and the strategy is clear. The question is, will this strategy work? For the first time in a long time, I'm bullish on Target. What are everybody else's thoughts will Target get is mojo back? #Target #CPG #EmergingBrands #NaturalFood #Grocery #RetailStrategy #FoodAndBeverage #BetterForYou

Just in completely different ways. 😂 🔥FOUNDERS: ✔️We are delusional. ✔️We sign a broker on Monday and by Wednesday we’re like: “So… did Target respond?” ✔️We think our product is the greatest thing ever created. ✔️We think every buyer should immediately understand the vision. ✔️We want more doors. Faster launches. Bigger POs. ✔️And when a retailer passes, our first thought is: “What did the broker do wrong?” Meanwhile… 💵BROKERS: We’re pitching the brand. Following up. Calling the buyer. Texting the buyer. Following up again without looking desperate. Trying another angle. Trying another retailer. And sometimes the answer is still… No. Or worse: Silence. Because here’s the part founders don’t always want to hear: Your broker does not control the retailer!!!! ✔️They can get you in the room. ✔️They can position you correctly. ✔️They can tell you when your pricing, packaging, margins or strategy suck. ✔️They can push. ✔️They can follow up. ✔️They can use every relationship they have. But they cannot make a buyer say YES Now that I’ve been on both sides, I actually have a lot more empathy for both. Founders SHOULD ABSOLUTELY be delusional. You almost have to be to build something from nothing. You should push your partners. You should expect urgency. You should expect communication. You should expect them to fight for your business. And brokers SHOULD be held accountable. Relationships aren’t enough. “Working on it” isn’t a strategy. Forwarding an email isn’t selling. But there’s a difference between accountability and expecting someone to control something they literally cannot control!! The best founder/broker relationships I’ve seen happen when both sides understand that. Founder brings the obsession. Broker brings the relationships, strategy and persistence. Retailer still gets the final vote. And all three of us are probably going to drive each other INSANE along the way. 😂 Ya? No?

Level 1 reminded me how much I enjoy learning. Level 2 pushed me even further and gave me new tools and perspectives I can bring directly into the work I do every day. After nearly two decades in the grocery and CPG industry, one thing has become very clear…experience is incredibly valuable, but there is always more to learn. I’m proud to keep investing in my growth, challenging myself, and building on the experience I’ve gained throughout my career. A huge thank you to Hanson Faso Sales & Marketing, Inc. Michael Reich for continuing to support my professional development, and to Western Michigan University for another great program. Level 2 complete. 🎉 On to the next challenge!

Instead they fixed the supply chain and now it’s clean: 2024 - Moms Across America and Health Research Institute test Banza chickpea pasta at ~2,900 ppb glyphosate, the highest level that lab had seen in a human food sample Banza’s response: says all chickpea suppliers either legally must, or contractually pledge to, avoid glyphosate and similar desiccants at harvest 2025 onwards: Banza earns The Detox Project’s CleanScan certification after independent ISO‑accredited lab tests show non‑detectable glyphosate Under US rules, EPA’s glyphosate tolerance for chickpeas is about 8,000 ppb. Legally, they didn’t have to change a thing. Banza shifted from a “within limits” defense to proactive sourcing reform. They started sourcing to chickpeas grown in naturally dry climates, where the crop can dry down in the field without chemical desiccation. This is how we fix the food system. Instead of relying on corrupt Government standards, we build a food system around ideal: chemical-free. Support independent brands and local farmers that value this future.

Ryan Mason liked thisRyan Mason liked thisBREAKING NEWS: Hawai'i just passed a law requiring all raw ahi to display where the fish was actually caught. For years, consumers were buying foreign, previously frozen tuna gassed with carbon monoxide. The new law is now protecting local fisherman who were previously struggling to survive because of this lack of transparency: Hawai'i is now the first state to require country-of-origin labeling on raw processed tuna like poke and sushi sold at retail. The move aims to fight back against an economy that now imports 90% of food eaten locally. It also claws back at one of the most deceptive practices: imported ahi can be gassed with carbon monoxide to permanently maintain its bright red color. The EU, Canada, Japan, and Singapore have all banned carbon monoxide fish treatment but the FDA allows it. Hawaii's Longline Association estimates that 90% of ahi poke sold in the state is imported which is all previously frozen and CO-treated. More than 60% of all seafood consumed in Hawaii is imported. Local fishermen were being priced out of the market because consumers are buying the cheapest often without knowing it comes from foreign fleets. Honolulu fishing captain Troy Pack captured the absurdity bluntly: "After expenses... I would make more money working at McDonald's. While across the US local producers are being hurt by imported proteins that still do not require mandatory labeling, Hawai’i is showing states can help fill federal gaps. Know who you’re buying from and support local production.

Lead in vape carts is still a risk. Jeff Rawson, Chair of the Institute of Cannabis Science, explains how leaded hardware can leach into oil and why screening matters. The fixes are simple. Screen hardware before it reaches shelves. Pull suspect lots. Tell customers what to do next. Keep clean records so teams can move fast. This is not a niche issue. It is a public health issue. How are you screening hardware today? 🚨 New episode this Friday, 11am EST on High Functioning Podcast. 👇 Links to RSVP and more are in the comments.

The premium cigar landscape is evolving, and cigar lounges across the country are feeling the impact. Once dominated by legacy brands and large distributors, the market is now being reshaped by boutique cigar companies that bring authenticity, exclusivity, and stronger profit potential to retail partners. For lounge owners focused on growth and retention, boutique cigars are no longer optional. They are essential. Today’s cigar consumer is more informed and adventurous than ever. Aficionados seek unique blends, compelling brand stories, and limited production cigars that offer an experience beyond the ordinary. Boutique brands meet this demand through small batch craftsmanship, innovative flavor profiles, and a sense of discovery that keeps customers engaged. Unlike mass produced cigars, boutique offerings create conversation. Customers ask for them by name, return to purchase again, and bring friends to try them. This behavior increases foot traffic and repeat visits, the lifeblood of a successful lounge. Higher Margins and Faster Turnover Boutique cigars often provide stronger margins than large corporate brands. Without heavy marketing overhead, boutique companies can offer competitive wholesale pricing while maintaining premium retail value. This creates a powerful revenue dynamic. Lounges earn more per stick while benefiting from faster turnover. When customers perceive a cigar as exclusive or hard to find, they are more likely to purchase immediately, improving sales velocity and humidor performance. The Power of Brand Story One of the greatest advantages boutique brands bring to lounges is story driven marketing. Customers do not just buy cigars. They buy into the narrative behind them. Drunk Chicken Cigars exemplifies this advantage. As a woman owned boutique brand founded by Desiree Sylver, the company stands out in a traditionally male dominated industry. Its bold identity, memorable name, and commitment to quality create a strong emotional connection with consumers. Lounge owners benefit from this built in conversation starter, encouraging engagement and loyalty. Demand That Starts Before the Lounge Boutique brands like Drunk Chicken Cigars generate consumer demand before customers enter the lounge. Through social media, influencer partnerships, and owner led messaging, the brand encourages smokers to request Drunk Chicken Cigars at their local lounges. The lounges that thrive today are those that embrace change. Boutique cigars represent a shift toward experiential retail, higher margins, and customer driven demand. By partnering with brands like Drunk Chicken Cigars, lounge owners gain access to products customers seek, stories that spark engagement, and revenue opportunities that extend beyond the humidor. In a competitive market, differentiation is everything. Boutique cigars deliver that differentiation and are proving to be the key to sustained growth and profitability.
